So going to be many takes on the question, but I take best canuck as leadership, off-ice, talent, tenure ... everything.

1. Henrik Sedin - the talent, the determination, the leadership, the off-ice
2. Trevor Linden - off-ice obviously. came back after unceremoniously being dumped. i don't think any cup losing teams will be remembered as fondly league wide as the '94 team ... it's almost as if they won
3. Markus Naslund - if west coast express could have been paired with a goalie, honestly think i these were our best teams
4. Pavel Bure - pure talent would be #1 by a mile. despite anything else, captivated the city like no other
5. Daniel Sedin - took a backseat to his brother leadership wise, but can't leave an Art Ross winner off here ... especially for this organization

No defenseman ... just none in that same ball park. Hopefully that changes with Quinn. Honourable mention Lu, but I couldn't make the case for him to bump anyone else. Feel like the shine of him got brightest after he left Van and opened up. He never should have accepted the 'C'. Management's fault, but he should have laughed it off and said thanks, but i have enough to do out there.

30's something age bias here too.

Petey (most playoff and regular ppg in Canucks history already)

Luongo

Honourable mentions: Nassy, Gradin, Ohlund and Quinn(who i think may end at or near the top of this list).

I'd still have Linden in my Top 10, I think. But here's why he doesn't crack my Top 5:

Before '94, Linden was perceived to be a bit of a disappointment. The fanbase wanted him to be a 40-goal scorer like Mike Modano. The fanbase was annoyed that he was maybe more effective as a winger than a center. The fanbase was disappointed that he didn't give 100% effort every game.

I saw a lot of live hockey during that period, and I do think there were nights when Trev mailed it in. The short attention spans of the modern era have been kind to his on-ice legacy. Wonder about toughness? Show the GIF of him slamming Jeff Norton through the glass. Wonder about giving 110%? Look at his two goals in Game 7 in '94.

To me, those two goals showed that he *did* have more to give. He was the only guy who still had gas in the tank at the end of such a gruelling series.

I think his 'grizzled veteran leader' role after his return gets conflated a bit with the 90s, when he wasn't necessarily the total package game in and game out.

Also, I'm conflicted about his role in the 2004-05 lockout, and how he was basically the catalyst for convincing the players to accept the salary cap.

While I disagree with your assertions that he “mailed it in” on occasion, I do respect your opinion, and what fans wanted in a Linden vs Modano comparison is in my opinion completely irrelevant.

Fans are stupid if they think he was ever going to be what Mike Modano was offensively, hell, Linden wasn’t even a center in Medicine Hat, he was a winger. Thus his puck distribution skills were never on par but he was always willing to get to the dirty areas when it was tough to do so back then to score goals.

Also, his dealings in the NHLPA have no bearing on his Canucks history in my opinion.

Good chat

Wow. That's the first I've heard anything about Linden in that vein as a young player. Admittedly I was quite young then and nothing before 94 really stands out.

I'd love to hear more insight!

I wonder if there are archives anywhere of Dan Russell's SportsTalk on CKNW from that era. You'd hear Brian Burke doing postgame interviews when he was assistant GM under Pat Quinn, and lots of bellyaching about how Linden and Petr Nedved weren't living up to their billing.

This just flashed me back to a Blaine story haha holy. Way back, guy starts chatting us up at a game and says he owns a bar and invites us and out friends....it’s the Roxy haha

Anyways bouncer wasn’t going to let us in, then he made a call to Blaine and the bouncer appologized to us and lead us in.

Kind of weird haha
