I look at it from both sides.
You need good defense and good goaltending. Sometimes they go hand in hand but once and a while you need your goalie to come up with a difficult save which is something neither Ullmark and Hutton could do. - Stripes77
I think ullmark came up with several big saves to help secure wins and keep us in games we lost
5 on 5, he was pretty good in almost every stat out there |

That's a wild one, and actually not bad but OEL would have to waive too. |

Toronto signs Hutchinson. - Stripes77
I puked in my mouth, then read it was strictly a "Seattle expansion draft" move.
He won't see the ice unless there is an injury. |

Cozens and Quinn were both selected for the camp.
My guess is Cozens plays and Quinn gets cut. That team is stacked. If Quinn makes it I would be very shocked. - Stripes77
With Dach and likely Lafreniere being released to play for Canada the odds are really stacked against the 2001 birthdays. The selection camp this year is a full month long with 6 games against a Canadian University all star team so just having prospects at this camp is a HUGE development opportunity.
The Rangers would be stupid not to let Lafreniere and Kakko participate in this tournament unless the NHL starts up and conflicts.

Lafreniere has nothing left to prove. To risk injury would be pointless |

I think it’s more about having the young guys hitting camp with with both feet and already in game shape.
This year more than most is the year you could see the younglings making NHL rosters because of it. |

Agreed this tournament is going to be elite this year and the only development opportunity other than the gym and skating with players you live close to. I dont think NHL camps even open until after New Years Day |

Yes but to have a guy of his talent already in game shape to start training camp benefits he and the Rangers tremendously.
Same for Couzins and the Sabres. |

Not if he gets hurt he won’t be.
Lafreniere is going to be an integral part of that teams roster next year.
Cozens will be a more secondary roster player.
I think the risks outweigh the costs but I’m not apart of the Rangers management team.
Anyone remember Lafreneire’s leg injury in last years WJC ? Why take that risk again |

It's the same reason the Oilers let Ryan Nugent-Hopkins play in the 2013 World Juniors during the lockout.

Time will tell I guess.
Imagine Hall or Eichel blowing their knee out in a meaningless tournament ?
To each their own I guess |

If Lafreneire is the integral player to the Rangers than they are still a bottom dwelling team. He’ll be a rising depth player with a high ceiling, similar to Cozens if he makes the Sabres roster. Are the Rangers out of contention without an 18/19 year old rookie lw or will they still compete with Panarin and Krieder in top 6 roles?
Deciding from a position of fear minimizes growth pace. Kid hasn’t played in almost a year, let him play and dominate heading into his first nhl camp from a position of strength and earn his spot. Draft is over, hype got him here now production will keep him there.

Sure, but the risk of injury is lower in practice then in a tournament of kids looking to make a name for themselves.
Ask the coyotes how useful Hayton was with a bum shoulder the second half of last year |

Lafreniere should be a 50 point winger as early as this year if we are talking about over the course of an 82 game season.
He’s the best forward prospect since Matthews.

That’s excellent and probably the reason he was drafted 1st overall. Until he is though he’s just a prospect who is young and hasn’t been able to compete at a high level for ~10 months. |

Yes, and those are the pros of him playing in the tournament.
It’s up to the Rangers management to decide if it’s worth the risk |

So not contact hockey for Jack Quinn this year in the OHL.
Should be good for his development 😬 |

Lafreniere's WJC days are over. He is a pro now, been there, done that and is not going to look back. He and his agent are not going to risk a season ending, career ending injury, take out insurance for a TSN Bob Mackenzie over-inflated tournament. Bank it. |
