Again, those guys were good, Those guys actually produced.
Girgensons is on bad teams and does not produce. - ImThatGuy
Datdude: more @ss talking today?
12 goals and 5th on the Sabres in goal scoring
2 goals behind the 9 million $ %1,000 guy.
That's production. Bad team probably lead to less scoring.
12 goals playing with Larsson and okposo.
Should get a raise.
But skinner%1000 , he didnt play with eichel last year ..... |

39, is there ever a point when you look at kahun and say, wow the Sabres and oilers could have signed him for under 1 million dollars?
That's his value. Maybe he's not a lock 3rd liner? Maybe all the gms see something you don't see?
Guys at 25 years old, that sign for under a million/ may or may not be an nhl player?
Just a thought? - Boss34
It all depends on how nuanced you are being when looking at intangibles.
Is it sheer size of the player? If so, you would love Vesey and hate someone like Brendan Gallagher, despite Vesey being built like Tarzan (6'3, 200) but playing like Jane while Gallagher (5'9, 184) is small in size but plays like Tarzan.
Is it being physical and hitting? You would love Eakin but hate Larsson, despite Eakin being a sieve defensively compared to Larsson who has been elite defensively.
Is it being strong on the fore check with speed, causing havoc for opposing defenseman due to having a high IQ when reading a play, meaning the player is most often in the proper position, and being excellent with their stick, causing consistent turnovers?
I'd argue there are multiple ways that would be defined as being difficult/tough to play against that don't include being physical and hitting.
If a player is tenacious on the fore check, excellent with their stick with causing turnovers, and almost always in the right position defensively, that is being difficult to play against.
Problem is that is more difficult to watch for when it comes to the average fan. |

I don't totally disagree, but Ullmark was pretty decent 5v5 last season. With an improved PK, as we all hope, perhaps he's a much better goalie. - TheSabresTaco
Ullmark was good when the shots were average to below average in quality.
When the shots were high in quality, he was near the bottom of the league, and that's with the Sabres being one of the teams that allowed the fewest high quality shots in the league. |

They have a better Eichel making 3/5 of the salary? And a bunch of other contributors on ELC that the Sabres don't have? Therefore it's not apples to apples, and they currently have the room for this type of move. Valeri also got 8th in the Selke voting, while Girgs is good defensively, Val is elite (or at least was last year). Discussed. - SDSabre

Excellent post 39 👍
Hard to play against, isnt always a face puncher.
It's a defensive style player , holding back other teams stars from scoring goals. I think girgs, does that well. |

Dominik Kahun and Tobias Reider have the same amount of goals for the Edmonton Oilers. |

I'm not going around posting kahun had bad stats when he was 5th on a team in goal scoring?
Discuss why kahun could have gone to the highest bidder via being a ufa and signed for under 1 million?
Hard to argue the facts at hand, although you are trying your best 😉 |

Maybe he wanted to go to EDM to play with Leon, whom he had previously put up 238 points with in 30 some odd games.
And if he doesn't play with Leon he gets to play with McDavid.
hes banking on himself getting a 4 mil contract next year after he puts up monster numebrs with those two. |

Therefore, he was a fine goalie, and probably better for the Sabres than he would be for, say, the Leafs. There's definitely such a thing as a system goalie.

Tremaine Edmunds. Edmunds started all 16 games for the Bills in 2019 notching an interception, nine passes defended, 1.5 sacks, and led the team with 115 tackles including ten for a loss. He also led the defense in snaps played with 981. (It would have been more, but he was held out of most of the Week 17 game.)
In addition to the Pro Bowl nod and great stats, Edmunds called the plays for a top-three defense at just 21 years of age.
How come everyone is dumping on Edmunds on a down year after a pro bowl year but Skinner got and gets his balls licked? What about but if he had a D line, but he doesn't have Star or Phillips, like Skinner doesn't have a center, or what about his shoulder? Where are the tears for him? |

Nichushkin is elite in his own zone.
Girgensons is very good in his own right but not as good as Val, and we’ll also see the effect losing Larsson has on the LOG line as well this year |

Mike - I love how you're laying it down in regards to both ka-boo-hoo-hun and girgs. Perfect.
Hard to argue with your well written comparisons.
But, girgs should have been free. He should have volunteered to play in buffalo.
The ufa status definitely made girgs contract difficult to gage. It's so easy to just assume they "overpaid".
What happened to loyalty to longtime buffalo players?
Gritty blue collar kyle Williams. fred jackson types?
Maybe it's just me, stars like eichel are clearly stars , but it's the glue guys that used to appeal to this market?
Maybe the losing has scarred girgensons among the fans? I think he becomes a favorite again next season when were winning ..... - Boss34
i just made a comparison to valeri nichuskin who was signed by a gm in joe sakic who's considered one of the best in the business right now...
they were signed to the same type contracts for the same term at about the same time and have produced the exact same goals/game
what's the difference between those two players? |
|
|
|
thought girgens got 3 years - homiedclown
you are correct:
nichishkin $2.5M cap-hit
girgensons $2.2M cap-hit
well done sir |

And how did this combat anything that I said? I never said he outproduces Girgs, but he got 8th in Selke votes and is elite in his own end. The cap situation is different, Col has enough room due to McKinnon being the second best player in the league at 6M, while tons of talent on ELC deals that contribute more. Girgs also got 3 years to Vals 2, when I believe McKinnon is due for a 13M contract. Basically they have the offensive firepower in their middle six we only can dream of, and having Nichushkin at that salary doesn't hurt them. I'm not a Girgs hurts the Sabres guy, but it's a completely different scenario. You ask, I answered. |
