Update - Mantha signs 4 yr deal 5.7/AAV. Lower than Larkin, I’m happy. Are you?

It's about what I expected. I'm happy with it.

Yzerman is a tough negotiator. I think he wears players down and they just end up knuckling under. It's still a good deal for Mantha though. I just hope he can stay healthy for once.

What the hell happened with all those NTC's on the Lightning then?!

That's how he stacked his roster. Tampa fans shouldn't complain. They won a Cup with star power and excellent depth with a stud goalie. Mostly without Stamkos.

Very fair for both sides. Potentially great value from Detroit's perspective as long as Mantha stays healthy and at least maintains his current level of play.

I like it.

Interesting - Ryan Strome’s ask to NYR is 5.7 (theirs is 3.6) for arbitration. 4.5 is the threshold. I don’t think NYR would walk at that number, but they’d have to make some shifts.
- Jeremy Laura

Rangers pretty much have to accept it. They're weak at the center position as it is. Zibanajed and then a bunch of plugs.

A big part of that was getting the $ lower. Yzerman used tax situation and NTC. New day, new market for sure

What’s interesting is that his actual salary this year is 4.5, but in the final couple years it is 6.5. Usually see the reverse, but I’m sure it is to do with cashflow. Wings still have almost 10 mil in space (not including Z’s LTIR if needed) with only Timashov to sign.

I was more thinking that Mantha signed until he's 30 and will obviously be hoping to get the "retirement" 7/8 year deal. But normally players want to get those at 28 to maximize their value and trick teams into hoping for 4ish years of "prime" levels. It feels like he (frank)ed himself from the big contract for the guaranteed money. Maybe he's worried the injury bug will get him again and take what he can get?

Could be. This took a while, so Yzerman may have been on the “short side” from the start. Mo expires one year after Larkin does. I do appreciate not having a ton of deals too far out. Yzerman has done a good job with shorter deals so far

Interesting, no signing bonuses listed. Or performance bonuses. I think there is a lot of cash conscious maneuvering. At second glance, the salary increase makes sense for the player too. 20% escrow guaranteed this year plus 10% deferment. The hope that higher salary will have less escrow could be a smart move.

Now they can trade Bernier for MAF and 2 2nd rounders and then retain $3.5M on MAF and flip him to the Canes for Riemer and 2 more 2nd rounders!
(I say 2nds because no one will part with 1st's till the deadline)

I thought 4x$5 for was about right....but figured Little Bert would get that, but would've been (and AM) happy if either one got it.

I hit "Send" WAAAAY to early on this one. Shows what happens when you're working and checking out JEREMY'S BLOG!!! Thanks, J, for keeping me distracted

Howdy, Henry. Look, TB is going to have to do something quickly. There will be some serious wrangling in the very near future out of sheer need to retain guys like Cirelli & Sergachev, those are 2 of the faces of the franchise going forward. Much like DET had to get deals done with Mo & Little Bert, TB needs to ship or get off the pot. It'll be interesting to see what happens after the arbitration period (I don't get the sense too many moves will happen until then, gotta see the landscape) ends….

Interesting read about kicking off the NHL season (whenever that may be). Like the idea of outdoor games starting w/an all-Original Six slate followed by Vegas in the night-cap......

Tampa needs to cut salary. This doesn't help them. Cirelli is also a RFA. Even if you give him a bridge deal he'll still make around the same AAV Strome will get.
