Kind of falls in line with Elias Pettersson, I love Pettersson but I don’t think he’s a top 10 player in the league. - Pacificgem
I don't either. Do you think that's the general consensus here?

Here's the problem I have with Benning, asset management
Trade the fuking guy for ? instead of letting him walk. - VanHockeyGuy
How set for the next 10 years would the Canucks be right now if Benning had been thinking long term before the last trade deadline and acted accordingly?
What if he had prioritized asset management over playoff revenues and traded Markstrom, Tanev, Sutter, Stetcher and Benn for prospects and draft picks? What if he also kept Madden and the 2nd round pick instead of sending those assets to LA?
Even without knowing in advance that Covid would alter everything, this could have been a legitimate approach to clean up their salary structure and build a perennial contender.

I don't have him in my top 25 and I think he is a fantastic addition to this team. |

Sweet armchair GMing. Trade away their chances at a playoff spot and swiftly be fired. Wonder why Jim didn’t deploy this genius strategy 🛀 🧂 |

That is a lot of what if's.
If you are going down that road, you need to include the JTM trade into the equation. |

What team trades pending UFA's if they are in the mix for playoffs? I'll hold off on the hate until TDL and see where we are. |

So he should have gut the team when we were in a playoff spot? At what point do we switch from thinking about the next 10 years to thinking about today? |

What else would you like to complain about or are you all bouncy castles and rainbows? - VanHockeyGuy
Thats just how you view the people in here that don't complain all the time. There are a couple that are legitimately like that. I get them on my back when I comment on how I see Podkolzin, or the parts of Greens coaching I have issues with and the overrating of certain players etc... but you are barking up the wrong tree with the bouncy castle narratives.

A lot can happen in a year.
Baertschi and Sutter will be done and Edler's $6MM per deal will be finished. Spooner's buyout will finally be off the books as well.
They'll probably just MTA Ericksson, Beagle, Roussel, Myers and Luongo's recapture penalty. - YeOldTimer

No but he should have the foresight to fill all the holes once the shyte contracts expire.
And not with exclusive AHL talent. All you fanboys are pumping Pod and Hog as top 6 players, so if that's the case trade Pearson while you can get something for him instead of letting him walk for SFA like TT. Sound reasonable or does JB just circle back to him at the bottom of the 9th? |

Nine. Pearson and Benn are gone too.
But I've been hearing Podkolzin, Hoglander, MacEwan, Lind, Juolevi, Rathbone, Chatfield and Rafferty are all ready to play. And then they've got Hawryluk and Bailey to round out the bottom 6 as well.
Utica has been great for the organization but just think of all the money Aquilini could save if they didn't have an AHL team.

Podz and Hogger both have top 6 upside, may not be this upcoming season(also can't rule it out) but they definitely have it. Podz can potentially come in and be that right away, doesn't mean you ship off Pearson. If Podz comes in after KHL season expires and earns the top 6 spot, Pearson on our 3rd line makes us that much better. |

I don't think JB will re-sign him. He'll just be coming out of the stupid deals.

Maybe Jim could have convinced FA of this if they knew about Covid's upcoming complications but theres no way FA is easily persuaded to just turn the season plan around while still in a close playoff hunt. Not that JB would want to without a crystal ball anyways.
The owner put the GM and coach on notice when he publicly(media) declared to fans and season ticket holders that the Canucks would make the playoffs. There definitely was a sense that Jims job was on the line after that.

Partly wishful thinking and part legitimate question related to VHG's comment about asset mgmt.
The writing was on the wall regarding Markstrom. Freidman would bring it up every time the Canucks played on HNIC. Tanev was also beyond his best before date and they would have known they'd lose him on the open market. Stetcher's name kept coming up around the trade deadline because they couldn't justify what his qualifying offer would need to be.
Like you say, those choices were made in favor of going for a playoff spot rather than trying to build a stronger team for the long term. As fun as their little run was, in hindsight, it might have been better if ownership had pushed Benning to pursue the asset management strategy. |

Well that doesn’t help, Hockey Guy needs someone to mock, you know ELC, Podz top 6, Benning, MTA, Flat Cap, Elmer
Tell you what, I’ll say top ten to keep the daily, weekly, monthly yuks going.. |

Valid point from Harman.
"Benning and the Canucks will face the same cap challenges next offseason as they did this year. As a result, Vancouver faces an uphill climb in its endeavour to emerge as a Western Conference powerhouse within the next two years." - VanHockeyGuy
Yeah so does half the league. Find my a competitive team that doesn't face that challenge once there stars get off ELC. |

Come on, never. You always want a crazy amount of draft picks. The players will just develop on their own. |
