Launch update, Pat:
https://twitter.com/SpaceX/status/1327988041424650240

Direct link to the YT stream:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnChQbxLkkI

Stream goes live at 3:15pm EST. The instantaneous launch window opens at 7:27pm EST.

If you have the Discovery Channel or the Science Channel with you're cable/sat provider, I believe they will be covering it live as well, beginning at 5pm. Search your on-screen guide for "SPACE LAUNCH LIVE: CREW-1 LIFT OFF". They are also airing Part I and II of a documentary about the launch, which already began at 3pm.

I'm assuming the most recent batteries are better today in terms of lifespan and durability? laptops back in the day would always drain so quickly...
- Pat1993

Lifespan... not really (explained below). Durability? That depends...

Today's small electronic devices almost exclusively use LiPo cells. They are actually more fragile than other chemistries and even cylindrical Li-ion cells. But they can be made in almost about kind of form-factor, so they are most ideal for small/thin electronics. Their fragility is why manufactures just seal them inside the device's case, which are now designed to help protect the battery as much as the other components. If they were interchangeable, then there would have to be in some sort of separate battery case to protect them, which would make the device too bulky.

The interesting thing is, LiPos have been real popular in the electric RC model world over the last 10-15 years exactly for lightness and highly adaptable form factor. For the hobby-grade battery packs, you'd rarely see any kind of protection being used other than some sort of heavy-duty plastic wrap. But that's because weight is important. I guess the reasoning is that if you crash the RC vehicle, then in many cases it's getting trashed, so why protect it from the battery? And in minor incidents, it's best just to trash the battery, which is much cheaper to do nowadays.

But yes, LiPos are definitely more power-dense (also why they're very popular in the RC model industry), so they last longer between charges than other chemistries. But their main downside (beside fragility and being dangerous/explosive when damaged) is that they have less amount of charging cycles in their lifespan than other chemistries. Most consumers these days just tend to replace their devices before this becomes an issue. And on more elaborate devices, like laptops, use hardware and software to better manage charging in order to maximize battery life. Regardless, most of the LiPo/Li-ion research being done today is concerned with how to increase longevity as much as increase density, in addition to how to make them safer.
