Nobody would get that right!

I probably told you the greatest hockey trivia (and a huge moneymaker for bar betting) is ask someone who was the first American/US team to win the Stanley Cup. The answer is the 1917 Seattle Metropolitans (who won it before the NHL formed). The same Seattle team also refused to accept a 2nd cup win when the Montreal Canadiens offered to forfeit the cup because of an outbreak of Spanish Flu that sickened several players. Seattle declined, saying if they could not earn the cup on the ice they didn't deserve it either. An this was 5 games into the series already with each team having two wins and one game ended in a 2OT 0-0 tie.

The Stanley Cup actually had an engraving added for 1919 which says the two team names and notes the series as incomplete.

I agree. I just wish we could get St. Patrick Elias back in the new threads!

So, now that Sergachev is inked, and the Bolts are currently 2M over the cap, with Cernak and Cerelli still unsigned, who do we poach off their roster?

Offer sheet Cerelli?
Target Gourde to help on the RW (who knows if Palms will be here next season)?
Take on Johnson with some cap retention or a draft pick?
Offer them our entire roster (minus Nico) in exchange for Victor Hedman? haha

This is one of the few years I think an offer sheet could work because it puts a real time crunch on them. Even if we do a one year contract with Cirelli for a lower amount so the comp going back isn't so high, Tampa would be able to match without making a big move. Then we can pay him next year. It seems like this is something that could really benefit us.

Heck, we could probably nab cerelli on a 2 year 4M AAV deal, then flip him 50% retained for a massive haul. Let's take advantage of this cap crazy year!

Bratt - Nico - Palms
Johnsson - Hughes - Gusev
Boqvist – Zacha – Merkley
Sharangovich – Zajac – Wood

🤔

we'll see what happens. the owners and players don't want to lose money, but we know how productive their talks can go. add the Covid wildcard and i'm not sure we'll have a season. I think we will..

What do you think about the proposed divisions?:

Possible NHL division realignment for 2020-21 season:

Canadian division — Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg

West division — Golden Knights, Anaheim, Arizona, Colorado, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minnesota, San Jose

Midwest division — Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Florida, Nashville, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Tampa Bay

East division — Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Washington

I hate to say it, but the Devs would be the punching bag in the Group of Death. That is not a good position to be in for a developing team. The NHL screwed the Devils with that Play-in and lottery system so I expect that to continue.

Over the years I have always felt that the Devils were the punching bags in general. We always seemed to have the most frequent and worst back to back schedules, clusters of many games like 6 in 10 days against harder opponents, or at critical times of the year for points end up playing all playoff teams, etc. Seems like we always get (frank)ed lol. Whatever happens will be par for the course. We just have to sink or swim.

If we can nab another decent D man it would make me a little more optimistic. However I think the pre-season optimism I had last year followed by the "steel toe boot kick in the balls" that the season ended up being, ruined all optimism I will probably ever have moving forward.

There is hope for the future, just not the '21 season. If they can nab one of the top 4 Dmen in next year's draft, it would really continue to be a step in the right direction. That said, there will be some pain in the near future.

There will be pain for sure, but at least we are used to it, or at least should be used at this point. Hopefully a few of the guys in the pipeline will turn up as NHLers. Coleman came out of nowhere, maybe a few of these guys will also. Sharangovich, Merkely etc. ending up better than anticipated would be nice in the lineup to see as opposed to guys like Hayden.

And hey this will be a short season regardless so if we do have to suck, we can do it in 48 games here or whatever. One big rookie development camp lol.

If it helps the players with reduced travel then it’s great. Will it minimize COVID? Idk how that could realistically be calculated. The virus is everywhere and almost distinctly impacts those already compromised. We’re all going to get it or already have it. Why do sports players keep coming up positive while most of us haven’t had it? Cuz they’re tested all the time, leading me to believe the a-symptomatic cases are more prevalent than we’re led to believe. Of course we need to be careful to not spread it, but it’s the compromised that really should be taking extra precautions. Let the games be played. Let us get another top 10 pick, and let the beat control your body.

It seems like the main objective is curb travel across the border. I agree that I don't see how it would lessen covid cases overall.

I think it's just so that if either US or Canada closes the boarders at some point they wouldn't have to just cancel the season outright.

I'm starting to get concerned that the NHL and NHLPA are not going to work things out and end up cancelling the season. If that happens, I'm sure Bettman will figure out a way to make sure the stronger teams have a good shot at picking up top talent at the draft.

To Martysbetter88's point, Covid does spread really easily and there are probably plenty of cases that don't get diagnosed. I have extended family members who were all sick in March (with various degrees of severity) and could never get tested because testing was still very restricted. But indoor sports would seem like one of the worst places to go and likely to remain restricted. Right now we can't get 20 parents into a rink to see their kids play so I can't imagine 16,000 sitting at the rock any time soon.
