Wasnt Mike Richter also a free agent at the time?
Just so odd a GM who won 2 cups on the strength of goaltending didn't find it that important. That is what he gets for listening to dirty Russians - login
I think he was but didn't think he would leave NYR. I remember it being down to Cujo and Beezer. I was shocked when we signed beezer and it ended up costing us.
No idea why we didn't prioritize goaltending, but it looks like we've finally rectified that. |

For some reason I thought another name was out there, and Beezer was a dark horse 3rd, but most of us thought/hoped Cujo would be the guy. I know Khabibulkn was fighting with the Coyotes at the time over money and perhaps there were rumblings of a trade. Maybe it was even Richter because he was from the area, but I donât think thatâs who I was thinking of. I dunno for SOME reason the mid/late 90s and early 00s are a haze for me.

Could be wrong, but I seem to remember rumors of the Flyers being interested in Mika Kiprusoff during the 00's before he became a total stud for the Flames. Not sure if this was at the same time as the CuJo/Beezer situation. I feel like the Kiprusoff thing was a little later in the decade, and it was a trade rumor not a FA signing. |

When the Flyers signed John Vanbiesbrouck wasnât there another free agent goalie everybody wished the team had signed? For some reason I think it was Ed Belefour.
Bill or anyone else remember. ?
Thought it was Richter and Joseph, and the stretch was Beezer.
Still shocked they didn't bring Richter home. |

Gagne is one of my favorite all-time hockey players. IMO, he belongs in the team HOF and should have retired a Flyer.
Cap dumped for Matt Walker after all he had done for the team was bad. Then that whole Dan Cleary fiasco after his 2nd stint was even more disrespectful.
Was so happy to see him get the chance to raise the Cup, even if it wasn't for the Flyers. He had a wonderful career. - Tomahawk
Business is business. Homer, by his own admission, should have been a bit more upfront with Gagne about the fact that cap issues might force a trade that offseason (so it wasn't taken so personally when the ask came to waive his no-movement clause).
But the worse part from a Flyers standpoint is that they had a one-for-one offer from Boston that would have sent Tim Thomas here and Gagne to the Bruins. The Flyers couldn't take it because of their salary cap situation.
Also Gagne was still refusing to waive at that time. Later, he said he would waive ONLY for Tampa, which made it hard to get any value in return. An injured Walker turned out to be an especially bad return.
Thomas, of course, won the Cup, the Vezina and the Conn Smythe in 2010-11. |

They had the much younger Rask, who took over the majority of the starting duties in 2009-10, and Thomas's contract had term left along with a cap hit similar to Gagne's. So they proposed a money-for-money contract swap of Gagne for Thomas but Philly couldn't do it (and Gagne wasn't yet willing to waive his NMC). There is more detail about this in Jay Greenberg's Flyers at 50 book.
As it turned out, Thomas reassumed the No. 1 role in 2010-11, winning the Vezina, the Conn Smythe and the Cup.
