Aren't the Habs the only team in the league where the players vote for the captain? Why did they pick Weber if Gallagher is the true leader?

Weber was named Captain by management not by vote

I believe Carey may be a leader in the room, and Weber may be the actual captain, but the "real" captain, and likely the next captain would be Brendan Gallagher. He is the heart and soul of the Habs, as seen in the playoffs last year. His work ethic, passion, and drive are unmatched on the team.

I couldn't disagree with this more! A team leader is not the guy with the biggest mouth. Gallagher and Marchand should never be captains. They stir up lots of energy and emotions and they work hard, but leaders? no way.

For the Blues, after losing Petro to free agency. (I heard the no movement/no trade was a major issue why he left). Blues have a handful of choices. Most expect ROR, but they could go with Steen, Schenn, Parayko, Schwartz and Bozak maybe as well. Steen is getting up there in age.

My guess would be ROR. His dedication to honing his craft has spread to others. Shows up early and stays late. Now other players do as well. That’s a leader.

I get why people say Gallagher. Hell blues don’t play the Canadians often but I hate that little wiener. Same could be said for Steve Ott. He was the Sabres captain though and now he is one of the up and coming coaches. Heard rumors he could take a head coaching gig soon but I still think that’s a few years away (hopefully, I like him behind the Blues bench)

Marchand will never be Captain. I love the Bruins and I Love how Marchand plays the game until he crosses the line. Different types of players. Different roles on the teams. Gallagher has been there when the Habs had nothing except Price. He is already a leader in that locker room.

I disagree with Ek’s wording but I think he was looking at examples of older players that just get keep the C even though they are not the on-ice player they used to be. Stevie did not fit that category when Bowman came on.
Some better examples might have been Messier in his 2nd NYR stint.....but it’s a fine line between doing what’s right right for the team and being a classless organization. I doubt TBay picks a new captain and Im sure Toews will still be captain when he’s only the 7th or 8th best player on the hawks.

I hate typing this cause I HATE the Hawks, Toews, Kane, everything about that organization. Toews is different. He lead the team to a dynasty that had 3 cups in 6 years. That’s a hell of a lot of hockey in 6 years. Toews IS their Captain. No one else on that team is deserving at all.

Captains are picked by head coaches. The relationship between Captain and coach is crucial. And yet, when a coach is replaced the Captain "C" isn't also examined for fear that taking away the letter would somehow hurt the player's ego in some way...That is ridiculous.

Sorry but...no. Such a policy would have stripped Jean Beliveau of his captaincy (an unthinkable offence), as it would have Ray Bourque (another unthinkable offence), along with many others.

I believe the Team’s Players should pick their Captain not the Coach. Coach should stay out of that decision.

Yes Gallagher is the logical choice for Montreal.

How awkward was it for Brown in LA when he was stripped but still played there?

Keith in Chicago should have been Captain instead of Towes.

I wouldn't be disappointed if Gallagher is made captain in the future, but the Habs have the right person for the job already as captain. Weber's a beast! At 35, he's still one of the most feared defencemen in the league. He would still make a Team Canada roster too.

I'm not going to assume I know what he's like in the locker room, but on the ice he's vocal. He's giving directions while lining up for faceoffs. He's talking to players after the whistle and on the bench. He's making big plays and big hits. He's protecting teammates, including Price.

I love Gallagher, but Weber is pretty much what every team would want in a captain.

Ek? I'm recalling a past blog you once wrote about Weber. It's very similar to what you're saying here.

I agree. Weber is still a force.

Until Stamkos goes on LTIR right before the shortened season starts. Don't worry. He'll return right before the playoffs start.
