Warning to the Hockeybuzz dads our there:

- get your Christmas tree tonight. Everyone is getting them early, so the cheaper places will be running out very soon. There were about 12 left last night at the place where we went.

We got an excellent tree, though.

A few years ago, my wife bought the ugliest LED thing. I’m not sure it was even supposed to be a tree except that it had stems sticking out. I think I may have lost it somewhere.

For the first year, son’s girlfriend is not going back to BC for Christmas and will spend it with us. My son told me that her family has huge Christmas traditions that they take very seriously and think they’re the best Christmas family ever.

We don’t do have any anymore except to watch the Ref. I think we’re going to have to make up some family traditions that we can pretend we’ve been doing for years with some elaborate back story. Maybe a midnight, backyard fondue dinner to celebrate the time Aunt Mildred ran off with the Swiss gentleman.

Does anyone have a keg fridge? Is it worth it or no?

Looking to put one in our butlers pantry area.

- bryant

It's fun. But it's a lot of work.

A basic one will fit either one 60L keg or two 20L kegs (I recommend getting one with two taps - for reasons I will explain below). I still have never bought a 60L keg - that's an awful lot of beer.

I prefer draft to bottled (or increasingly canned these days).

But here's the thing that you really need to know: you can't get a lot of variety for 20L kegs, unless you are picking it up from microbrewers. And they come in all shapes and sizes. There's only a few Beer Stores that have kegs reliably - the one I would always go to is at Bathurst and Dupont.

If I had a party, I'd get a pissy lager (like Steamwhistle, although you have to change out the coupler to a European one - not a big deal) and an ale. If you are going to do this, I'd recommend getting a double regulator - so that you can have different pressures for the different beers. Heavy ones require more pressure.

It's also a bit of a party novelty - people like pouring your own beer.

Having said that, I haven't had a keg going in over two years (it's been a bit of a crazy time here with family commitments sucking up my time). It's now at the point where I will have to replace my lines if I want to fire it up again (my fridge is in the basement, the taps are in the kitchen, so I had to run about 8 feet of line).

What's the price these days - about $600? You'll love it for about 2 years for sure, and then after that, I make no predictions - you may still love it, you may be sick of the extra work.

One extra note: you won't save money. Ontario beer prices are highly regulated. With the foam, you'll actually lose a bit of money.

Happy to answer any further questions.

We started a new family tradition a few years ago - attending a play of A Christmas Carol. Sadly, that will not happen this year - we will watch one of the movies (I'm pushing for a Muppet Christmas Carol).

Anyhoo, if you are familiar with the story (and by that, I mean if you have read the book - which is probably the greatest book ever written), you should check out the movie The Man Who Invented Christmas. it's about Richardens writing the book. Fantastic.

It really hammers home that 95% of what we celebrate today is because of A Christmas Carol.

To make it even more "Christmas like" just say that the Swiss gentleman was actually Santa Claus. That great Aunt Mildred was doing her holiday tradition, which is jolly ol' St. Nick.

Very interesting, thanks.

All my buddies and I are pretty basic when it comes to beer. We bring the same one whenever we go to each others places so I think that shouldn’t be an issue. I use to experiment with a lot of beers when I was younger but now I just stick with what I like.

I like the lines going to the basement that’s a great idea. It’s not a very big space but I want to put a wine fridge and sink in as well so if I can get away with just having the lines going through the cabinets that will free up some space.
