How disappointing would it be if Sanheim has a Karl Dykhuis type career?

If the Flyers are keeping Ghost and Gus in the same lineup, having Provy take longer shifts when needed on defense for Ghost makes sense.

I think the Sanheim for Nylander trade rumor is a fair deal and fills voids for both teams.

Next season Flyers defense would look like...

Provy - Myers

Ghost - Gustafsson

Gustafsson - Gustafsson

Ghost, Ghost

that defense is hideous. Even adding Sanheim back in it still isnt cup caliber imo.

Bill talks about the site is still not finalized and errors are being worked out. Yesterday's blog, I think.

There is much you aren't considering. The Flyers have a major hole on defense. They are not in a position to trade a highly talented young quality two way defenseman. You're forgetting all the years the Flyers suffered and had to overspend to add defenseman due to not drafting and developing defenseman well. You aren't considering that making that trade creates a bigger hole where there already is a hole. You aren't considering that a quality two way puck moving defenseman is a far more important player that a scoring winger. I could go on and on.

Nope, I’ve thought about. Personally, like I said, I wouldn’t do it before this shortened season. I am really high on Zamula, and he is going to be less expensive than Sanheim throughout this flat cap era. I really hope Zamula gets some call-up games this season.

Most Leafs fans probably think that the proposed deal favors the Flyers, just like most Flyers fan think it favors the Leafs. My point is simply that it is a fair deal.

I am ok running with Ghost and Gus in the line up, give it some rope and see how it plays out. They have to take a shot in getting Ghost value back up and at least making it to the deadline

Agree. Trading Sanheim takes our defense from being up and coming but still raw, to downright top heavy and sucky.

The Flyers finished 7th in the league in goals scored. They aren't hurting for scoring as much as people think. (playoffs notwithstanding)

I would much rather bank on a Lindblom, Patrick, Frost goal scoring boost than create a giant sized hole in the defense that cant easily be filled.

agreed, all teams are faced with the same challenges, all teams have holes or question marks, all faced with flat cap, now is not the time to make a panic move

While I wouldn't make that trade it isn't a panic move. Your getting a very good quality NHL player back. One who will be part of your core going forward.

that is true, I should have be more clear. The Flyers have taken the time to build a home grown D, we as the fans have paid the price watching them grow. Sanheim is finally coming into his own and not even peaked yet. They would make this trade because they couldn't score in the playoffs, their O during the season was just fine. To me that would be a panic move, not that you are not getting back a quality player but a panic away from what they have been building and due to 1 playoffs.

Whether or not Saheim evolves into a top 2 dman or he flatlines I rather take the chance to find out before I move him. This a big year for him as he def struggled some in the playoffs; which isn't that much cause for alarm. He will be looked upon t take on a bigger role the way things stand right now

Playoffs is what matter though. It was very disturbing watching the overall offense.

I don't think you have. Look at the growing pains that Sanheim and Myers have both gone through and are going through. What makes you think that Zamula won't face the same?

I'm questioning the line two and three order... I believe, from what I've read (and know of Ghost)... Gus>Ghost, and not sure about Braun and Hagg. Braun has the experience but is getting older. Hagg as a stay at home defenseman, he has slowly been improving year over year.

Power play, Ghost and Gus? Power Kill Hagg and Braun?

The Flyers have a chance to be a solid team this year for one big reason. The budding superstar in Carter Hart. Otherwise, the loss of Niskanen is going to sting. Unless Myers or somebody else takes a really big step, which really isn't that likely, the Flyers are going to have a big hole on defense. They already overplay Provorov.

you cant afford to move SanHeim. Zamula and York need time, maybe a couple of years from now you would have a better case to move him. My guess is he plays well enough, continues to improve and he is a solid top 3 D man, Sanheim should go nowhere.

I think he is the most important piece but I think without Nisk there will be goals that go that Hart cant stop, ones this past year that were shut down by the D. So timely scoring is going to be huge, not that it always isn't. The Flyers have to stay top 10 in O, make it to the trade deadline and move from there. If they have a shot, take a risk on a trade.

Nothing is ever a guarantee, even Sanheim or Nylander for that matter. Also, it is true that even if a player for player swap is fair value, it doesn’t mean that it always makes sense with the team’s other pieces or long term. In this case, both players have some track record and are entering their primes so it is more about fit and planning.

If this trade rumor comes again next year in the offseason, folks might feel differently. Hart needs to be re-signed, and we will see what happens with Myers and how the offense looks in another playoffs.

Yes, I do think Zamula will be a quick study and approach NHL readiness quickly. He needs to add strength and weight. All this offseason time will surely help him get to his goals faster.

He will. With the shortened season I could see them rotating the d men like they did the 4 th line last year. Keep people fresher. Except provie. Machines just need oil.

I think that a Sanheim-Nylander trade would be a fair deal from strictly a player perspective. However, the departure of Nisky has left a gaping hole in the D that won't be filled internally to the same degree of competence, at least not very likely. Lose a #2 to retirement and a #3 to trade leaves the Flyers with problems. Because of that, I would not do it.

Re: WJC, it looks like USA may have a pretty strong squad considering they have 7 forwards returning from last year's team. D only has York as a return player while the rest are new but have some strong credentials. #1 goalie Knight and #2 Wolf are both return players. Should be a great tournament again this year.
