The crazy thing is that it would have been relatively easy to sell a guy like Melnyk on an Eriksson deal a couple of months ago, because of how cheap the dollar value of even a 4-year buyout would have been. Of course now, even teams like Ottawa and Detroit have spent a lot of their intended budgets for the year, and it's an even steeper hill to climb to get anyone to take on Eriksson's contract.

Had Benning been focused on that instead of getting caught up in stupid OEL rumors, it might have actually given them the resources to be more legitimate contender this year. Instead, he's posturing as being principled in not giving up picks/prospects in an Eriksson deal, and instead will bury the Canucks in mediocrity for the next 2 years, until all of those absurd depth-forward contracts expire.

This. There was a window to move bad contracts and it passed. Detroit had tons of space and took on Staal at $5.7M, earning a sweetener. Then they filled out their roster with a bunch of cheap guys on 1-year deals that they can easily flip at the deadline if they want. LA took on Maatta. Ottawa and Minny and New Jersey all took on contracts. If Vancouver really wanted to move Eriksson they needed to add a sweetener and convince one of these rebuilding teams to take him on. It's too late now, especially with so much uncertainty on the season. This is why I dismissed the Hoffman to Vancouver rumour right from the start.

There are still a handful of teams that could fit Loui in. Its not too late if the price is right!

Agreed. There are still teams with room. But how many owners are interested in absorbing the Eriksson contract when we're looking at a shortened season with no fans and steep losses. It better be a very, very nice sweetener, which Benning already said he wouldn't do.

Trade him to Buffalo for Kyle okposo. It doesn't help them get Hoffman but it lets the fans of both cities be bitter about a different guy for two years lol

Okposo has 3 years and Loui has two , Buffalo would need to add a first rd pick.

On a more realistic possibility Loui will be a Canuck for two more years and Hoffman won't.

I expect us to regress somewhat. We did lose superstar Troy Stecher.

I don't want Hoffman taking up roster space with Podkolzin and Hoglander on the way. Or cap space for that long with raises to Pettersen and Hughes(among others) coming up in that time. 1 year deal or GTFO. Vancouver's biggest need right now is patience.

Yeah, I was going to ask about this since I wasn’t sure of their impending cap situation over the next few years.

Erickson to NJ(50% Salary) & Vancouver 2nd round pick for NJ 4th rounder 2021....Vancouver keeps their 1st rounder...Devils then have 5 picks in first 3 rounds to keep building around Nico & Jack...NJ seemingly has cap space to do so

Okay enough already. I don’t care which team it is. Edm, Cgy, TB, etc. Trading bad contracts or questionable LTIR moves need to be addressed by the league, teams signed these guys knowing they will decline. Easy to pass the buck etc.

Loui to NJ with 2021 & 2022 1st round picks no money retained.
The Marleau trade last year is the obvious comp!

I don't think the league needs to address anything - there's finally a tangible consequence for GMs spending like drunken sailors on July 1st or handing out NTC/NMC like they were candy, and the long-term impacts are just starting to be felt by the teams who are most guilty. TB just got the benefit of getting a bunch of players to sign long-term with NTC, and they won a Stanley Cup. Now they're in a salary cap $hit-storm, which is just the natural consequence of making those multi-year, NTC-heavy signings back when you weren't having to pay full market value for the likes of Kucherov, Point, Sergachev, or Vasilevsky.

Similarly, if teams are willing to trade away 1st round picks and quality prospects just to move one bad contract decision, that's going to start really hurting them in the long-term. And we're just now starting to see the rise of teams who have directly benefited from other teams' cap constraints. What needs to happen is a change in GM behavior, akin to the demise of the pure goon role in hockey. And quite frankly, Benning has proven to be something of a disaster when it comes to UFA.
