Because we get nothing for releasing him now. It needed to happen June 1. AJ Eps was not ready to take over full time, so they held onto him. Now that he's been surpassed midseason, releasing him only means releasing a reserve player and getting nothing in return, ie cap space.

Simply said, the Bills felt the need to hold onto Trent because AJ was not ready to fully supplant him. That is the reasoning he is here today. Beane would have done well to release Trent and sign a rotational Edge to play with Eps, but he didn't, so here we are. They apparently thought the team was fine enough with his cap space included. Fortunately next season he falls off and we can move on.

Analytics suggest the D is certainly improving.

It was mentioned several times on the broadcast, he is poised and calm. He has a handle on this offense.

He matured and is getting smarter and reading the defenses much better than anyone could have anticipated.

I don't think we have seen his ceiling yet either
