Having a top-10 defense (or close to it) seems to be a prerequisite for reaching the conference final. Of the 60 teams who have reached the NHL's final four since 2005-06, 82 percent (49/60) finished 13th or better in goals against that season.

I watched an interesting video the hockey guy on youtube put out a week or 2 ago about drafting your own best players and how that translates to playoff success.

Of all the cup winners and cup finalists going back to 2014, he looked at the 1C, 1D, and starting goalie of each team. Out of those 42 players I believe only 2 or 3 were not drafted by the team they were playing for.

Bodes well for Van with Petey, Hughes, Demko set to be the future trio for the Canucks.
