I think that teams have to be cap compliant on the first day of the season with all cap hits counted. Then they can papers on LTIR.
I don’t think LTIR moneys accrue toward the TDL at all.
I may be wrong. - StLBravesFan
No you can LTIR someone before the season that doesn’t count against the cap.the reason why you try and fit the LTIR on the day one roster because when you do LTIR you start accruing cap space.

This. I keep seeing people say that you have to be cap compliant on day 1, if that was the case, there's no way Toronto could have been compliant last year.
I still say that we trade Smith to TBL for Johnson +(+). TJ is only 1.75M in extra money, is still valuable as a 3C, and if we could get a top prospect and/or a high draft pick, it would be worth the extra money. TBL gains cap space to sign Cirelli by utilizing LTIR, and Cirelli is definitely more important to them than Johnson. |

Also, if we have Johnson, Strome would be even more expendable. Trade his rights (or sign and trade), and get more futures. I like Strome, but he's not great at the dot, and his defense is pretty awful. If the Hawks lost him, I wouldn't consider that a huge blow for our rebuild. Whenever he's on the ice, it seems to me that the Hawks are almost always trailing the play. The Smith for Johnson trade would mean that the Strome For Tuch+ would have to either involve Vegas taking back some salary (Carpenter? ), or retaining cash, or both. |

Don't want to be technical because Columbus *always* gets a pass on the name thing - and no matter what they say, their team is actually named after a singular native American person -exactly like the Black Hawks.

But the logo isn’t based on Native American images - and their understanding of the team name is based on Union soldiers of the Civil War.
That all may offend the unreconstructed Southerners - but they have their statues.... |

I assume the Holiday trade freeze doesn't apply this year? If not, then no trades can take place until about the 27th I believe. |

Even if there is no league announced trade freeze it would be pretty crappy to trade a player during this time of year after what everyone has been through.
I would hope that the GMs would be considerate enough to hold off a few days. |

Probably won't see any trades until the "opt out" period ends in a few days. Why would a GM trade for someone who may decide not to play this season and conversely why would a GM trade away a player, say a D, not knowing if another D may opt out further weakening that position.

What the Hawks did to Billy Reay was sure a sleazeball move

Good point. It makes it difficult to deal if you don't who or what you have to deal from.
Any idea when that opt out deadline is?
I wonder what Rask is going to decide with Boston since he opted out of the RTP? |

I remember that story. Just cold. Besides, not enough head coaches wear hats any longer.

Dec 24th for the teams that did not make the play in last summer and Dec 27th for the teams that did. The dates are different since the teams that didn't play get a 3 day head start on their training camps. |

Well, I'm sure the fax machine was not working......
No seriously, that was the other story I was trying to remember. Terrible way to treat another human being.

Not too obnoxious looking.
As long as they don't go all out, NASCAR fire suit I can live with it. |

How long do the Panthers have to sign Travis Knight before he becomes a free agent? I believe it is June 1, 2021. Would he be an option if none of the Hawk candidates work out? |

Well if you and Ty are right about being under $3, I'll be shocked - BetweenTheDots
My thoughts on Strome $'s.
Assuming QO is ~$2.0 I've heard 2nd round compensation is $2.4 for what it's worth but using round #'s say $2.0.
Let's also assume we're in a world of "no offer sheets" not a stretch by any means.
Two get him to sign for two years you only need to go high enough that a rational mind would not take the one year gamble. To take the one year gamble he's got to be betting on himself to at least double the QO in year two as a UFA, say $4.0-5.0... for two years that would make $6.0-7.0. Stan's "sure thing two year offer" I don't see being higher than $6.0-6.5.
Just how I'm looking at it. Yes he does have a market value but in flat cap with most teams at the cap you have to be really good to get over $4.0 right now. I don't think he's shown to be fast enough or strong enough to be that guy? |

I nominate Carpenter. Assuming Smith is unavailable
Dark horse candidate is The Cat, if he doesn't have 7 goals in the first 3 games. - mohel
Cat, Nylander (we can still pick on Nylander even though he's out that won't be difficult), Toews, hopefully not Kubalik. |
