Not talking about anyone but Nylander of that group. He showed zero heart as a Sabre and had a chance to reset the clock and expectations when given a break with the talent-hungry Hawks. He proceeded to do pretty much the same with Chicago. Soft, perimeter player who only wants to play on one end of the ice. He has some above average skills
Or is it better to keep beating our heads against the wall and hope the concussion will really not happen. - jrsamu
It's not like he would have been keeping the next Kirby Dach from cracking the lineup or that the Hawks have any grand plans this year for another parade so I'd have preferred to see him playing and hopefully figure it out.
Teuvo's been used as somewhat of a comp for a similar type of player. Most fans wanted him gone, maybe not as a sweetener but we all see how well that's worked out for the Hawks. |

Good news for the Nylander naysayers, they get a season long break...or not.
I have then both my meniscus and they sent me to a sports rehab, and asked, do you want regular read or a an intensive get back to the way it was before rehab.
I chose the "I dont plan to try and put a ghost move on anyone, so just make sure the stuff works when I am old (now, lol!)
He very well may be back quicker. In football a menisci tear seems like a no big thing.
Unless this is way worse, and if it was you think this process would have started before "resting"it was the solution.
If he doesn't play at all, it doesn't give the player and his representatives much evidence to take to an arbitration in a contract negotiation.

its to bad about nylander: this was a big year for him. I know he was not great but he only played 12, 4, 3 games in Buffalo over 3 seasons.
lfor everybody that said he was terrible would you be surprised to hear he was 5th in EV goals and 5th in assists. he has more EV goals then CAT. and more EV Assists then Dach or Kub.

Random question about the cap and overage: If a team is over on day one, but needs to place a player on LTIR on day 2 (which would make them cap compliant), what is the penalty for that? Would a team maybe think it is better to go that route than to trade off a player they really don't want to get rid of? - powerenforcer
They possibly forfeit the game.
. Teams found to have violated the cap face fines of up to US$5 million, cancellation of contracts, loss of draft picks, loss of points and/or forfeiture of game(s) determined to have been affected by the violation of the cap. |

Whoa - that blows. I know expectations are pretty low for him but this puts the Hawks in a pickle on what to do with him after his ELC expires after the season. - EbonyRaptor
Easy next year qualify him at "Perlini" money whatever the QO $ is? |

Is there a glut of potential top-6 (or even top-9) forwards in the system ready to be looked at now?
This was to be Nylander’s year to show he is ready and a top-6 winger going forward. Who replaces him - who in the system is ready to?
It seems that these kinds of injuries always (ok, usually) require surgery, not just rest and rehab. He should have had the surgery back in August.
But - I’m an accountant, not a doctor. - StLBravesFan
Actually I think this works to Stan's advantage. He'll get a 2@$750k deal like Quenville got.

You know if they are under 25 years old let's get rid of them because they are strugging playing against men. So get rid of Nylander, Strome, Debrincat cause he's had a down year, and god help us if Dach struggles this year. Just naming forwards for now. - BetweenTheDots
Agreed some were even writing Boqvist off after the playoffs. He had no business being on an NHL team last year he's still a kid and will be for at least two more years. The guys that go early to the NFL are usually red shirted juniors actually in their senior year. Many are red shirted and beefed up their freshman year. That's why you're seeing guys as graduate students in the transfer portal their senior year of football. |

What the Hawks did to Billy Reay was sure a sleazeball move

On this date 1976, #Blackhawks fired coach Billy Reay via a note slipped under his door. - LAHawk
He still had an younger male companion bringing him to all the games as he quickly aged and became challenged.
I always though Reay was very over rated....in an era when there were strong stategists coaching many other NHL teams.
I feel they were loyal to a fault much too long with him.

Actually, I think this benefits the Hawks. They get to evaluate others in his place. If they find that the others show as much or more potential (not to mention actual production) they can either trade him, or at worst resign him for cheap as his current resume does not dictate much in the way of leverage. - Chunk
And the waiver wire is going to be full of surprising names in the next few weeks as the cap crunch takes hold for some teams. Some of the guys on the list will be much better players than Nylander is now. |

NHL schedules are out. Here's the Blackhawks schedule:

Also:
@BenPopeCST
The Blackhawks also say on-ice sessions of training camp will start Monday, Jan. 4 even though camp itself starts the day before. - Theo Fox
All 2-game series in the same city (except for a 3 game series at home against TB and the fourth TB home game a singleton later on).
Only 7 (if I counted correctly) back-to-backs, all with both ends in the same city. |

I think they know more about Kucherov then they are leading on - BetweenTheDots
Kucherov is now confirmed to miss the entire regular season due to hip surgery. The Bolts expect him to return by the playoffs.
Since they can now spend up to $91M, reports out that Johnson is likely retained after having 3 teams interested in him. |

If Stamkos and Kucherov sit out the whole season think about being able to load up the roster for one shot. |

Considering how long they stayed with Pulford in whatever capacity, that's more of an observation of a trend, isn't it? |

Fair enough, i just don't see the downside of playing a young player when there is no one to replace him that would impact the team more.
I though at times he played the game the right way, not always but hell even when he played against the Oil in the play in playoffs he was doing many little things right, i might be in the minority but it's what i saw.
The hardest thing about being a pro is being consistently consistent. For the record i do think he, Strome, Boqvist among others would of benefitted from more minor league hockey games. Unfortunately it is not the world we live in today, so, except for game day, i can have patience for them developing. I know rationally these kids need games, i lose it irrationally when they make stupid plays on the ice that end up in the back of the net, but that's just me.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. After game 1 vs Boston to me he really accepted the fact he was going to be punished and was willing to be punished to make plays and eventually win that series and actually brought a little nastiness with the acceptance. Good team but if he's not back for the playoffs no way they win the Cup this year.

Hull went to Winnipeg in 72, the Hawks actually went to the finals again the following year, so finals with Hull in ‘71 and w/o Hull in 73. Billy Reay was let go in 76. |

The bolded part is the key that you nailed on the head: consistency is critical but tough to master as a pro. This is one of the things that Derek King and coaches working specifically with prospects are emphasizing.
Nylander, Strome, and even DeBrincat have struggled with consistency but none have played on the Hawks farm team. Dach and Boqvist have but not for very long and their growing pains showed it.
Dach obviously has been able to grow leaps and bounds without time in the AHL while Boqvist really should have spent the entire year last season in Rockford.
Then you have players like Kampf, Highmore, Hagel, Carlsson, and Beaudin who spent significant time with the Hogs. Kampf and Highmore are impact players as 4th liners. Hagel, Carlsson, and Beaudin showed in their brief cups of coffee that they didn't look out of place.
Beaudin could use more time marinating and Hagel, too, to an extent but Carlsson is ready after two full seasons in the minors. |
