I'm pretty sure that players on LTIR can't be traded, bought out, etc (someone please feel free to fact check this). I believe this is why Smith is still on the team otherwise he may have been gone by now.
- Theo Fox

Hossawas traded while on LTIR. Also the guy from Philly that worked for the NHL.

True, I am looking at the positives (to me anyway)

1) Stan is not going out to sign the Fernando Pisani's of the world. We will get to see Suter, Hagel, Kurachev, Highmore get their chance, and evaluate what they have.

2) We can evaluate is Strome the strome of2 years ago or last year. Also, who is the true DeBrinket, a 40 or a 20 goal scorer.

3) Season is short, less time to wallow in our sorrows.

4). If the season truly is a dumpster fire, I think you will definitely see Keith, and whoever else can return a draft pick gone at the TDL, if not beofre.

- LAHawk

I think the plan is for a dumpster fire regardless what happens to Keith. None of the new guys are the next Kane, Toews, Hossa and probably include Sharp. We'd be lucky if there's another Kubalik or this year's Kubalik is last year's Kubalik? I'm not expecting major strides, I'll take what I got last year.

As expected, Dach is out for the WJC and is flying to Chicago today for more medical exams.

Terrible news for Nylander and Dach.

Here’s hoping speedy recoveries for both. If Dach doesn’t need surgery, that would be ideal.

Silver lining is that this opens up some spots for more youngsters up front.

Reports are that Dach has a fracture. Timetable still unclear but generally as Bob McKenzie described (as posted above by sensarmy).

The timetable increases significantly if surgery is required. Otherwise anywhere from 4-8 weeks depending on severity and rehab.

- Theo Fox

I am currently watching and he just fractured the wrist as it got caught inside on a check mid-ice.
It will take months and he will probably be on wing for awhile not taking face-offs.

It's not like it gives the hawks big cap space like Kucherov departure from Tampa.
But if there was ever a year you want more less able contributors than your 3rd overall player it would be this "rebuilding year."

Team Canada' Dawson Mercer just became a centre again.

From the Athletic.....
"Nylander was sixth among Blackhawks forwards with 1.96 points per 60 in 5-on-5 minutes. He was also third among the forwards for being on the ice for the fewest high-danger chances against per 60. The analytics point to a player with some potential."

Also almost no PP time and playing up and down lines from top line to the 4th line with different (and sometime awful wingers).

Like Strome I would not seeing more of Nylander (of course Strome this year and Nylander next).

- -Doh-

Until you look at things like how he actually plays. Poor on the boards and worse at knowing where to be on the ice or what to do with the puck. It is easy to see how he dominated juniors - being a bigger player and having a lot of technical skill - but with the 'smaller ice' of the NHL he does not look good.

When he has plenty of time to get the puck, look around and make a decision he looks pretty pretty good. When there is any type of pressure or urgency he looks very very very bad.

Kind of silly to have a NHL player in a showcase for kids.

Yes it could have happened during the regular season or practice but at least that would be with a NHL team being a pro - not some amateur event.

Tyler I think this is to the team's advantage with Nylander. He should be easy to sign at a "Quenneville like" contract 2@$750k which is actually a pay cut. Yes he loses a year of development but we get two more years to figure him out cheap. Meniscus injuries are usually not serious my wife has one and can still clean the house without surgery. Umm, no she doesn't read the board.

It is the same argument as letting NHL players play in the Olympics, The World Cup, etc. My guess is part of the reason he went, is to train some actual hockey, instead of waiting until training camp opens.

Agree, that is the silver lining in all this.

It's still early but with Dach and Nylander out, the starting lineup and even 23-man roster starts to come into focus.

Suter - Toews - Kubalik
DeBrincat - Strome - Kane
Janmark - Wallmark - Shaw
Highmore - Kampf - Carpenter
Hagel

Keith - Murphy
de Haan - Mitchell
Zadorov - Boqvist
Seabrook, Carlsson

The Hawks don’t need two more years (so three years from now) to figure out what they have: this should have been “his year” to show enough improvement...or not....

Good that you’re giving your wife two more years, tho. I’m thinking she probably controls the option years....

If Kubalik can’t get to 40...
If AdB can’t get back to 40...
If Kane can’t maintain at 40...

They won’t get to 2 goals per game.

Not exactly Santa with a ho ho ho, but if Dach had to break a wrist the right was the one to break. As a right handed shot his right hand is down the shaft and is not as important during stick/puck handling. It will adversely affect faceoff taking, but the hand on the top of the stick is much more important for everything else. Now if he needs surgery all bets are off.

Happy Holidays to the whole roster here!

I know most people are rooting for (or at least think) Hagel will be the next prospect in line to get a shot but I’d like to see Kurashev get a shot.

Exactly how I saw the forward lines too, Theo.

Those bottom 2 lines would be a pain to play against. I want to see Hagel in there for Carpenter the odd time.

On D, I would switch Mitchell and Murphy. But that’s just me.

Let’s see how long Dach is out but looking at those lines above, guys like Suter, Walmark, and Hagel could be the main beneficiaries of these injuries.

I like Kurashev a lot as well.

I think we see him at some point this season. When we do, let’s hope they put him in the right position to succeed - which is in the top 6.
