Hoffman is 10th in total points from the 2009 draft as a fifth round draft pick, damn those Senators are good at drafting and developing players. I wonder who their chief amateur scout is?
Edit: his name is Trent Mann......“Trent Mann, the club’s highly-respected chief scout, met with the media in a Zoom call Tuesday, one week ahead of the first round of the National Hockey League draft. With three picks in the first round and another four in the second round on Wednesday, the Senators are confident they’ll be improved in the end.” - LeftCoaster
I’ve said this before but you are wrong about Ottawa’s ability at development. Yes, they do draft well but their franchise is a sh itshow that limits their ability to develop their players properly. |

Montreal is a lot deeper than Vancouver and yes they are better than Canucks, write that down in your book. - Reubenkincade
I don’t know about deeper but they play better defensively, or at least have the potential to and their goaltending is better.
Drouin, Kotkaniemi, Tatar, Danault, Gallagher, Josh Anderson, Suzuki, Armia don’t exactly strike fear into the opposition I’m guessing. |

Luckily he had no money to spend this year or I’m 100% certain he would’ve re-signed Markstrom, Toffoli and Tanev to long term deals. Which would’ve created more problems down the road. |

Lots of loopholes in the CBA for intelligent management teams to exploit. I remember when Benning and Linden first took over the team the NHL had to call them and explain how the CBA works - LeftCoaster
And here we are, seven years later.

I haven’t been around in a while but who’s asking for JB to spend more? He’s wasted so much cap space already. |

This. Finally, his horrendous free agent signings prevented him from more horrendous free agent signings. |

That is bull because he spent the same amount of money on Scmidt and Virtanen as he could have spent on Toffoli and Tanev.
They did not lock in on long term contracts this year . They did not sign anything over two years which is what you should do in free agency.

That lineup is still a pretty solid group when you add Toffoli. 3 good lines. Jmo, they will be top 3 in division. |

I wonder if FA put the breaks on or if it was self-impossed? |

pure fantasy - bloatedmosquito
Over their past history they’ve drafted and developed some very serviceable NHL players from deep in the draft. The proof is there for looking! Look at Erik Karlsson, Thomas Chabot, Zinbanejad, Ceci, Lazar, Mark Stone, Dzingel, Pageau, the list goes on and on. They don’t have to be NHL stars, but rather play NHL games.

Their strength is in the style of play more so than their talent level. They had a very good series against the Flyers. They’ll definitely be competitive. |

Could also be that JB did not want to commit long term to any of those players. We will never know. |

For sure, but having players that fit that style is a big help. They are pretty solid from goaltending out.
I am not a Habs fan, but will be cheering for them whenever they play the Leafs. |

Again, they draft really well but I believe great development creates more than just skills and IQ, it cultivates player pride in the franchise that drafts them. It propagates a team first attitude and the desire within the player to do what they can to ensure team success whether at the AHL or NHL level.
I’m not sure if a team first culture exists within that franchise. |

I love when people think a team is hooped because of a 3 million dollar player.
