This is definitely the next big issue. I think it is the most critical test.

They haven't officially declared "ticket season" dead.

They have sent a few emails (the latest a week ago) basically saying they have nothing to repoert.

I'll dig it up and post it.

Dear A. Tom McWedgie:

Last week, the NHL and the NHLPA announced that they had reached an agreement on a format and timeline for a start to the 2020-21 NHL season beginning January 13. This was exciting news for all of us looking forward to a return to hockey, but as we know, every activity during this pandemic requires diligent coordination with public health authorities and a focus on the protocols in place to ensure the health and safety of all participants and the greater community.

On Christmas Eve, the League then confirmed that it had reached an agreement with the various health authorities for each of the Canadian clubs to start the season in its home arena in a newly-realigned seven-team Canadian division. We are grateful to the NHL, the NHLPA, all levels of Canadian government and public health authorities for their hard work to make the NHL’s return in 2021 possible, all while making public health and safety the top priority.

Of course, with the current public health protocols in place, we are not able to host fans for games at Scotiabank Arena for the foreseeable future, but we look forward to progress in 2021 that will allow us to work towards the day when we can play in front of our fans again.

Thank you for your continued patience and support over the past 10 months, and for your efforts to keep your family and our community safe. We know that the coming months will continue to be difficult, but we look forward to returning to play in January to proudly represent our city and our fans during these challenging times.

In the meantime, on behalf of the Toronto Maple Leafs, I wish you happy holidays and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Yours truly,

yeah part of the reason he had to do that was because he paid HUGE dollars to RFAs who had achieved nothing.

Are the Leafs the only team that has had to get rid of a contract. Did any other team give up a first purely to get rid of someone?

The is strictly a critisism of Lou though.

It does. I mean, I don’t really lose out. What is kind of frustrating is that I’ll probably start being charged for another season starting in March even though I’m already owed an entire season. If that makes sense.

Once there’s a game played in the garden for the 21-22 season I can carry forward the balance from 20-21 to start paying for the 21-22 season. The problem is, by that point I’ll have already paid for 70% of another season with zilch to show for it. First world problems for sure and not a big deal. I was just curious what other teams were doing.

- RickJames77

Back in about February 2020 they said that we were going to have to start paying for 2020-21.

There was apparently a franking huge backlash from corporate seat and box holders, so they backed off.

They still haven't collected a dime for 2020-21.

Which reminds me of a true Wedgie story:

During one of the lockouts, they had already collected the money for the season. By law, they were required to send us money for the interest they had accrued.

So every month, they were sending me cheques for around $2.

I never bothered to cash any of them, but I did frame one. I used to have it in my office, and I would tell people that I briefly played for the Leafs - that was how much they thought I was worth.

Marner had 94 points. How the hell is that achieving nothing? Matthews was the most productive 5 on 5 goal scorer since Lindros almost 3 decades ago.

So Marleau deserves his contract at ages 38-40 because he proved himself?

Are the Blue Jackets smarter for locking-up PLD for a cheaper cap? 2 years signed and eh wants out. Good job!

Sharks don't pay 4 forwards for 40 million, so why not. They are only paying 26 million to Burns, Karlsson and Vlasic.

I'm amazed many fans complain about young stars getting paid big, but are always ok with supporting players who are dime a dozen getting overpaid bad.

I'd rather overpay supporting players than pay aging players for the points they put up on other teams, seven years earlier.

But yeah, probably better to pay young guys big.

Pretty good. Russians don’t have much offensive firepower, though.

Except for rare superstars, you pay RFAs based on an assessment of their potential and not on past achievements. Past achievements obviously help you assess the potential but you can’t argue that the didn’t show that potential.
