If he reads HB it won’t be long and he’ll want out.
- Garnie

You got that right. And if they were signed to bridge deals Dubas would be the guy who couldn’t sign his players long term.

🤷🏻‍♂️Doesn’t matter what happens, every person has fans/haters. Everyone talks about the youth and we shouldn’t have expected a cup but we traded Marleau away with a 1st and he only had 1 year left. They bridged AM but paid him like it was 8 years. Marner should have been bridged, paid him $11m, how much more would he have got 2-3 years later...not much and now with Covid it would have been less. It’s not an easy job I realize and if I was in his boat I’m not sure what I would have done, probably traded Nylander for 3rd pairing D like Roger would have.

Oh yeah, big time. I’ve been there - just not for a hockey game. Figure skating competition.

I wouldn’t have the stones to bridge Marner. Might piss him off enough that he would demand a trade. In my lifetime every time the leafs trade a young star it turns into a 15 year punch line.
I also would have went a little higher with Matthews to get the 8 years. We haven’t had players like this since Sittler and MacDonald. You have to pay your best players.

He's already that guy. Matthews took him to the woodshed. 😡

He’s probably the next leafs player to get 100 points. It would be great to have them all on team friendly deals but it doesn’t work that way in Canada.

Would it be better to have him wanting out like Laine or Dubois?

- shack67

I think Matthews out points him every year from here on out.

Marner will be battling for the scoring title this year and the haters will suck it. Licked it, sticked it, stamped it.

Matthews was the easiest contract ever. I want this much for 8 years. We can’t do that but we can give you this much for 5 years. Done

No.

Maybe I am suggesting that there is reason to question him as a GM.

Being frustrated with the Leafs has little to do with Dubas. I was alive when they won the cup last. There have been many years and many reasons to be frustrated.

nope impatient

Im just joking, maybe you're right about Dubé? I just don't think there's enough data to make the call yet

I am happy that we finally have a team that's exciting to watch no matter what the result

Scott Hamilton???

So it wasn't even a competition - it was an exhibition.

Are you watching the WJC? Do they broadcast this in the US of A on a network, or do you have to buy a package?

I moved to Boston on January 2nd, 2000. Phoned TSN that night - asked for satellite coordinates so I could go to a sports bar and ask them to play it.

Guy on the phone laughed at me - claimed they got 1,000 calls a year - and sadly, there was no way to watch it out of country.

It seems like people started criticizing Dubas from the moment he got the job over Hunter. You have to take it with a grain of salt I guess.

It was definitely an exhibition. I just said competition without really thinking about it, but yeah.

I am watching. The NHL network sources TSN feeds for a bunch of games, but USA games are not only aired, but run by NHL Network crews.

The is strictly a critisism of Lou though.

Dubas cleaning up the trash Lou left.

I am not sure it is.

Regardless of where the bad contract came from. At least part of the reason he had to give up a first was because he signed bad contracts for the big 4, or maybe should not have signed Tavares, questionable.

Other teams have dealt with bad contracts, but I cannot recall one giving up a first just to get rid of it.

I texted my mom. It was a tour of US Olympic qualifiers/medalists or something along those lines.

I'm amazed many fans complain about young stars getting paid big, but are always ok with supporting players who are dime a dozen getting overpaid bad.
- RogerRoeper

Overpaying is overpaying and gives you the same cap problems whether the player is young, old, or a star or not. In fact, overpaying role players usually doesn't hurt you are long, whereas overpaying young players you have a better chance of getting out from under.

The effect on your cap is the same.

It's not his fault they had to get rid of a bad contract.

It doesn't matter what you think of the deals he signed, they had to move that poop contract no matter what. Even to sign all to bridge deals they had to move that boat anchor to make it work.

Signing stars and elite players is most important.

Do not overpay role players. No excuse to do that.
