I understand it just fine.

Point is Stars drive the play, handle them then fill out roster. If you are overpaying depth guys you are sinking yourself.

Overpaying is overpaying and gives you the same cap problems whether the player is young, old, or a star or not. In fact, overpaying role players usually doesn't hurt you are long, whereas overpaying young players you have a better chance of getting out from under.

The effect on your cap is the same.

There's a difference between getting paid big and getting overpaid big, though. And one guy on the Leafs is overpaid big.
