If you allow hate to fester, it'll grow to a level where you cant put that genie back in the bottle. Good for you for having a moral conscience though.
Like Cupsie said, you cant use education to battle misinformation anymore. Once someone becomes indoctrinated, theres pretty much no changing them. All those crazy people getting Proud Boys tattoo arent going to wake up one day and realize they're wrong, they're going to commit violence and become so radicalized that they'll start killing.
Nazi's had free speech, 60+ million people died as a result of that. - Arctic_AARDVARK
The Nazis had free speech? You sure about that?
Nobody can do as much harm as the state. As long as the state does not stop anyone from saying anything, I'm okay with the results of saying things.

I'm not seeing anything in here resembling an argument but rather I see apologetics that seek to provide governments and corporations (who control the flow of information and thus, seek to shape discourse) the power to decide what is considered "hate speech" and what should or should not be cancelled.
A few quick hits:
- Just because some governments have decided to cower behind "hate speech" laws to "protect" its citizens doesn't make the philosophy behind those decisions necessarily right
- "It's hard to debate" is not an argument.
- The solution to misinformation by cancelling its ability to be in the sunlight of the mainstream is not a solution at all but rather a road towards creating an ever-growing, unchecked dark underbelly of society
I'll offer this speech, by Christopher Hitchens at UofT in 2006, as a final word on the matter. You'll want to take note of the bit on "fire in a theatre" which provides the true context of that very phrase.

If you don't see the established link between racial violence and hate speech as something that resembles an argument, I'm not sure what I can give you. I'm ok with giving government the authority to make the decision to balance freedom of speech against the negative impacts of hate speech. The law does that. That's not cowering. That's our elected officials introducing, publicly debating and voting on legislation.
I'll be a bit more confident about the cleansing virtue of sunlight on misinformation once I start to see the % of people who believe the election was stolen get into single digits or when Q just becomes another letter in the alphabet
I'm not saying Alex Jones shouldn't be able to have his own podcast. What I object to is someone like Joe Rogan giving him a much wider platform to spew his hatred. I don't buy the argument that Rogan is motivated by outing Jones, exposing his lies, etc. Rogan is motivated by ratings, and having people talk about him, like we are here. Everyone already knows who and what Alex Jones is. - fifty__missions
Rogan: Alex Jones is a great guy! I love him!
Also Rogan: Gavin MacInnis is a great guy! I love him!
I used to listen to the JRE, but he got too cozy with fascists.

The Nazis as a political party and then as a government used hate speech. We know where that ended.

Theres a difference between outlawing hate speech, and outlawing anything but hate speech like in Nazi Germany.

There's a law against violence. Violence is a crime, speech isn't. We don't need another law against something which isn't a crime. - Zezel
I think we're living in a situation where we can should be able to understand the concept of trading of constraints on certain freedoms against some broader public good.
Hate speech is simply another example. Hate speech leads to racial violence. Limiting that freedom of speech as it relates to hate speech brings broader public good.
You can disagree with the calculation but the concept is no different than being required to wear a mask.

The way I feel, as long as something does not directly infringe on someone's body or property, by definition, it is not a crime. If people want to say vile poop, unless it's libel, it's not a crime.

Big metal block that appeared along Humber Bay. Some balloonheads already grafitti'd it. But then other people scrubbed it. I'm gonna check it out tomorrow. - Zezel

I just feel the virus is a physical danger, speech is just ideas and there should be no restriction on ideas at all, because people have the freedom to accept them or not. If some person commits violence due to an idea, arrest them for violence. I'm a libertarian on speech

Everyone is so gung-ho about their freedums.
Owning a gun in America is seen as birth right too. But more people die from gun deaths because of it. Its the same for FOS. I'm not saying we shouldn't have debate around these issues, just that there's a line where it becomes dangerous, and therefor its up to public officials to protect the public.

Yeah, they've been appearing all over the world ever since one was found in the US that had been there for several years. Like the monolith from 2001, but silver.

Bill Gates is having them created so that they can increase the mind control powers of the 5G network to help usher in the NWO under George Soros.
