If he goes to the A, he's getting 5m over the next two years, he won't retire, would you? 10 percent of his career earnings on the line. - Pres.cup
You've made 61M already, can you afford to give up 10% for a chance at the cup somewhere else or happiness? |

Lol, if he's not on the Canucks, the only cup he's getting close to is the calder in Utica as an elite mentor to Hogz. |

Lots of speculation coming out of NYI. The talk of Barzal wanting long term 10 mil is quickly fading to a two year bridge deal at a reasonable cost. Also there is speculation Isles have signed Matt Martin to 4x 1.5 .
I sure hope something in the range for Barzal around 7.5 so that sets Petey and Hughes up next year around the same. Signing both our guys around 15-16 mil would leave plenty of room to navigate the 28 mil cap space next year. - VANTEL

No other team would sign him, even for league minimum. Which cup contender is Sam Garner playing for? |

No other team would sign him to a new contract. I think next year Canucks will give some team a second round pick and maybe add a Rafferty to take Loui's last year. |

this (the primes of these guys and the other young stars) should be the guiding principle to ALL the team's moves. - RealityChecker
yeaaa thats why i was a little disappointed with their offseason this year. im hoping this season is at worst a small step back but stung a bit to miss out on a year where your best 5 counted for ~25% of the cap |

tonight's game features two of the heavyweights from the Pfizer Conference. Let's see if the Viagra Vancouver Canucks can keep it up against the Cialis Calgary Flames.
And of course, the game will be played in the Calgary Pink Taco Bowl . - RealityChecker

Barzal's closets stats comparison would probably be Rantanen 6 years 9.25 AAV on longer term
Laine's 2 year 6.75M for a bridge deal. |

There was a time not long ago that we were all just happy/surprised that Green had finally healthy scratched him. The next logical step is waiving and sending him down. JB has done it plenty of times in recent years with vets/regulars - starting with Prust, Higgins, Gagner, Bear-cheese, so it wouldn't surprised me. Also, walking away from 5mil when you've already made 61mil is not that crazy. Considering he could always go home to Sweden and play another 2-5 years & make another couple decent pay checks. Obviously not 5mil but maybe 1 or 2 cumulative. |

Yeah but not one player got 9 mil this year and Barzal is the last domino . It does not look like it is going to happen.
GMs finally finally getting smarter? Probably not.

It was a worldwide pandemic that took money away in the first place. The NHL announced the weeks before the cap was going up three mil and then the pandemic took it away.
And yes I am still right. |

i tend to agree. i don't think they're getting smarter, i just think that the external forces (that foisted a flat cap on them) are driving decisions more than in recent years.
if i had to guess, i think owners have been a little more forceful as to what they'll tolerate. also, there's just so much uncertainty so a lot of people on both sides (agents/players and gms) may want to "wait this out."
wait a couple of seasons for the world to get back to "normal," which they think will course correct contracts upward again. |

It's taken steps forward. Canucks even at half are going to need to add something for a team to take him. After another team takes him at half and maybe they suck and let him play. Maybe someone else see's him useful at half of that for added PK at the TDL.
Realistically pretty doubtful but still a slight possibility. |

whats he got left on the calendar... 18 months? i dont think he walks away from $275k/month for a contract at home that pays him 1/4 when the time is that short. maybe if his final bonus was 3m hed leave after that but i cant see why hed do that |

Sven Baertschi on a rush drill goes bar down on one end, then on the other gets lumber to make a really difficult tip off of a rebound.
Demko gets across and robs him like he plays for Vegas.

Yeah you and manvan are probably right - I'm just trying to brainstorm reasons why he might consider it and logistics of it from a financial standpoint. I honestly don't think he's gonna play much if at all this year unless its with Utica and I can see him suffering thru it but I doubt he'd wanna do it again next year - if things go back to "normal." |
