One thing about goalies - when they are teenagers you really never know who is going to develop into a top big leaguer.

Supposedly Askarov has already had 4 coaches this year which can't help.

Levi is playing behind an awesome defence, but a .975 save % is still impressive. He is very economical moving around in that crease. Askarov is not.

No goalie coach for the Russian team this year .Khabibulin had to go home .

I’ve already quit those leagues, but then you know that. Shockingly, after less than one season I found I didn’t miss either.

Hockey was my last vestige of sanity...if it goes south, I might just give up sports altogether.

Having been more of a football guy over my life, hockey has also become a final refuge for me. Hopefully, it stays that way.

Could make the argument that isn't really the best rule to follow - Carey Price, MA Fleury, Tukka Rask, Vasilevsky - a few Stanley Cups and Olympic Golds among that group.

But then there is that long list of Al Montoya, Hannu Toivonen, Leland Irving, Tom McCollum, Pascal Leclaire etc, etc that never amounted to much.

- RickJ

I believe the majority of Stanley Cup Champion Goalies are not drafted in the first round. For every Raask or Vasilievsky in the league there is a Corey Crawford, Chris Osgood, or Tim Thomas

Also Carey Price may be the most overrated NHL player of the last 20 years.

Incorrect.

Find a list of the entire rosters of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the last 53 years and you have the perfect definition of overrated.

DiPietro, Barasso taken first overall, even though Barasso won 2 cups I will argue that was because with Lemieux and Jagr they outscored everybody. At best journeymen. Lehtonon third overall, yech.

Bernier, Campbell no better than backups.

Hopefully Subban finds his inner Price rather than Pascal Leclaire.

I think you meant to say right glove catching hand, besides the ones already mentioned, Tony O also caught right handed.
- Angotti

Greg Millen and Gilles Villemure were Other Hawk goalies that caught right handed.

Manon Rheaume. Played NHL exhibition i think it was just a publicity stunt. But she was an accomplished women goaltender. Her brother played for several NHL teams including the Blackhawks. I have a M Rheaume hockey card an she is an attractive looking lady.

Most overrated last 20 years would be a fun mailbag. I'm going with Dylan Sikura. Honorable mention Artem Anisimov.

New blog! A reflection on news and updates after day one of Blackhawks training camp, the AHL’s announcement for the 2021 season, and the impact of both on the IceHogs.

Askarov will learn that pure ability is not enough to be successful. Turning pro then he will discover consistency is based upon more than ability. No one should expect a goaltender to step into a starting role immediately after his NHL draft. The success of Sorokin should be a wake up call for Askarov. I would wager that Sorokin does well as a rookie this season. He has a coach and system as a NYI probably helps him more than most if not all NHL teams. Yet Sorokin benefits from a couple or so years development since drafted. Askarov should have some things figured out after a couple of seasons. I am curious, though, does anyone recall all time top NHL goaltenders whom had a left glove catching hand?

Hey Hawk, you like to ask questions. I am pretty sure Montoya played at Loyola Academy high school. Who was his backup?

I did a little research and it looks like I stuck my foot in my mouth. Montoya is a bit younger so his backup couldn't have been Danny Wirtz. But I remember working the game when Loyola won the state title and he was the backup that game. So, never mind.
