Our 4th line is one of our biggest advantages.. they can put those guys out there against any line and often put them out to get the team going after giving up a goal. Any player in NHL making $1.5 is not a big deal to me... it's like when everyone went nuts when we signed Mayfield for 1.45 .. Leo is an issue b/c he makes $3 mill a year. - niteislander
We need the top 6 to be the teams biggest advantage. The 4th line is not getting us past Tampa. All these deals add up and hurt the Cap. I probably did not love the Mayfield deal but he was a lot younger and a dman with size. Barry and his system has deal the deal look a lot better. |

If true, it’s more than I would like in $$$ and term. This coming from a MM fan.
Again if true and also would like to know if it’s a 1 way or 2 way deal and all the particulars, not believing this. If true Lou’s taking care of one of his soldiers. - nyisles7
Yep taking care of one of his soldiers but not taking care of the best interests of the team. |

Take the successful results and leave it at that
The team he put together worked. I’m over the deals Lou signed two summers ago. I think that discussion has been best to death on here.
That said, I don’t like the deal if true as stated by Friedman. - nyisles7
The results are the results but let’s be honest or at the very least show some semblance of common sense here. The way the cap is now and where Martin is in his career this is if true a moronic deal. You can’t keep doing stupid crap like this. We traded away toews sorry that’s not optimum when you sign kuhnackl and Martin while also having Leo Komarov signed for another two years. Those three players alone comprise more salary and term then toews. If Boychuck didn’t retire we would’ve been absolutely (frank)ed. That gave us some space to utilize it this way is to me stupid. Can’t wait to see the Kuhnackl contract numbers |

Islanders have to start prioritizing skill. It cannot just be about grit. Islanders leave themselves very little room for error without more talent. It's a lot of pressure on the D and goalies. You have to be able to win playing any style and the offense is lacking. |

Martin was great in the playoffs I’ll be the first one to say it. I like the guy. I’ve been a fan of his since he started with the team. With that said Martin like the rest of the fourth line was pretty much useless last season. Between injuries, no grit, physical play, defensively terrible you name it. The writing seems to be on the wall for Martin and for that matter the rest of that line. That’s not when you double down and sign the guy to a four year contract |

Martin was great in the playoffs but how much can the 4th have left at this point? Casey already cannot stay healthy. Cal still feel numbness in his left hand. NHL is a different game now. You just do not see this type of 4th line anymore. It's pretty bad when even during a Pandemic Lou is throwing out 4 year deals to MM. It's just not good business and why do you need both MM and Ross? I hate the idea Leo might be on the 3rd line with Pageau. |

Shat signing? - JohnScammo
I think it might be categorized as that but look how well the team did with the other shat signings
I’m not a fan of the length of the deal. The $ amount I could live with for 2 years but even that’s a bit high. He’s def gonna be with the club in some capacity after he retires. |

I like this signing. He is a good player and a big part of this team. If your going to be mad about a contract it’s Andrew Ladd joke contract. This signing is the worst in Islanders history. |

The cap not going up in the next couple years certainly makes this look like an over payment and term being too long I have to agree. Again this is coming from a MM fan.
Who knows maybe the league is going to give the teams some kind of relief valve due to COVID because most teams are in the same boat as the Islanders or worse.
Still don’t believe the deal unless I see it from an Islanders press release. Strange it’s out before the Team officially announced it. Not a normal racist old white mans why of running the team.
One good thing is when You Casey and him get beers together he can pay |

post on Matt Martin's surprising new deal with #Isles:
Hearing it's four years in the $1.5-million AAV range. Certainly would keep MM here for the rest of his NHL career. - jimbro83

He's never retiring. He can't make that kind of money in any capacity other than as a 4th liner who finishes his checks long after the puck has left the zone.
I must admit, the length of that contract leaves me speechless. On the other hand, Lou has made me a believer, and I am still enjoying the Isles' first deep playoff run in more than a quarter century. I'm thinking Lou has maybe inserted some sort of "out" clause in the contract, so that, if necessary, MM gets jettisoned to Robidas Island or front office retirement like a certain back-up goalie who shall remain nameless.

I'm still a fan of Lou as well. I might just show up to his office tomorrow and try to get a 3 year deal.
I'm too shocked at this deal to even swear although I should not be shocked. |

Yeah I mean Matt Martin and his agent are probably shocked also. Who would’ve thought with the league where it is right now and salary cap that any GM would sign a 31 year old former physical player that’s obviously on the wrong side of his career to a contract that’ll pay him till he’s 36. - Cptmjl
31 plus 4 would make him 35 me thinks?
