K let me be more specific. Stay with me. When Morrissey was inked, Gustafsson and Barrie were each 60+ point players. JoMo's career high is 31. So yes, doubled. Now flash forward to post Covid, their are inked between 3-4M. This is the market value and how the players have dropped. If JoMo was a UFA today, no chance he is sniffing north of 6M. No chance. Good D who realistically is a 2/3 guy on most teams, but get to bear the weight of the load with the Jets for now.

This really isn't worth debating, since nobody would offer much for JoMo's contract, nor do the Jets have anybody available to fill his void.

Yeah but Morrissey wasn't a UFA when he signed, holy fu*k those guys all signed at different times then Morrissey and under completely different circumstances, not only did the market crash due to Covid but it can't be denied that the fact all three of those guys seasons crashed as well which also greatly effected their contracts, Barrie's crappy season, E.Gustafsson dropping to less then half of what he produced the year before and Vatanen being injured dropped their value as much as Covid did.

You’re furthering his point here.

Morrissey also had a very bad season. He wouldn’t be making 6.25 if he signed at the same time as the rest of that pack. The age doesn’t particularly matter.
Vatanen topped out at about the same age and level as Morrissey (so far), and has since tailed off. Barrie followed a similar curve, but hit a much higher peak. Gustafsson never fell off at all, but got hit with a bad Chicago team and a coach that didn’t know what to do with him.

Bottom line is if all 4 mentioned players were UFAs this summer, Morrissey would be on a short term, lower cost deal just like them.
This is what makes his deal hard to trade. He’s worth less than his billing (right now), and teams can’t take that risk of a rebound now

The timing and circumstance of the signing does matter though, also those three are all more offensive dmen then two way dmen like Morrissey is, think we'd be surprised by who GM's are interested in acquiring.

You realize that Barrie's bad year still had 42 points in the shortened season.... This debate is not worth going forward. JoMo is a good D, not a true 1D, and his contract doesn't attract buyers in todays depleted market. That's all. JoMo will probably be the Jet's top D again, and there is nothing wrong with liking the guy. He is good! Just not a contract that can be moved given the circumstance is all.

Relax, I am primarily a Dev's fan and I have Subban on my squad. Now that is a headache.

This is true, they all do skew offensively... but I think you have the philosophy backwards.

The NHL struggles a lot when it comes to evaluating defence.
Teams are far more willing to pay for offence, which is why you see a team shelling out 6mil for “point getter” like Myers who struggles in almost all situations, but the two Gods of the Blueline out of Minnesota (Spurgeon and Brodin) are considered overpaid by fans despite being very much elite.

The NHL pays for point totals and size on defence. Vince Dunn is easily St. Louis’ best defender, but Scandella do big hit, and Krug do big point, so Dunn gets nothing.
People actually wanted to keep Myers and Chairot at those cap hits, but thought Toby was overpaid (he was at the end, but not by much).
Some people still think Doughty is good because he was elite 4 years ago, despite all signs pointing to “suck”.
People still think Ristolainen is a viable option because he’s 6’5” and runs a passable powerplay.

Josh Morrissey right now is a player that we should hang on to, get a proper partner for, and make the most of. He is overexposed and miscast right now. He is not a #1 defenceman, and he needs someone that can carry/transition the puck. It’s his biggest weakness, and addressing it will probably level his play out and restore his ethereal calm.
And no, that’s not Pionk. They’re absolutely brutal together. Give JoMo a Niku, or DeMelo, or even offhand Heinola. Someone who can get things moving, and not skate into heavy coverage for no reason or chip the puck off everything always.

Sbisa is claimed. Kylington is not. NHL!

Also, I could kiss David Poile on the mouth for this one

Damn, I liked those two especially Sbisa, far more solid then you or the fancy stat crowd gives him credit for.

Who's that Canes goalie that's on waivers, Njedolovic or something? Pretty sure he was at one point the Canes goalie of the future, had success in the AHL, might be worth putting a claim in for him.

Sbisa is actually a lot worse than he’s given credit for, as evidenced by his continued employment. He’s just bad. I don’t know how you can like a player that moves that slowly.

Sbisa's not slow actually, he's a strong skater, if you think he is that's surprising you're such a Lowry fan, he's really slow.

He’s... a strong skater? Why hasn’t anyone else ever said that about him? In literally his entire career

Jets now one injury away to their defense or goaltending from having Niku or Berdin in the lineup.

Comrie is no loss....never proven himself to be an NHL goalie.
Sbisa was just taking a spot away from a younger d-man.
Too bad nobody claimed Perreault, but wasn't expecting that.

You are right. Sbisa probably was their fasted D on the back-end in terms of flat out speed. Pionk is a little faster in tight. His speed/size/shot made him a steal at 800k. Sad to see him go, but hopeful he will get a decent role with his new club.

Lets hope that Heinola and Niku can start to assert themselves into the lineup. They have both dominated with their current clubs and appear poised to leapfrog Beaulieu/Forbort, and compete with Demelo/Poolman for actual TOI. Or is Heinola going to remain with his club?

One day you’ll realize that stats people watch more hockey than almost anyone else. Nobody just looks at the numbers. How do you think they get a lot if this information?

Your narrative is lazy and needs to die.

Yeah too bad, Sbisa's size, physical play and ability to drop the mitts might of been needed, I could've seen him getting in the lineup more then was thought he would, Calgary is going to continue to run the Jets runt dmen and as much as I think Poolman is decent he's fragile, won't be surprised if he's injured sooner then later.

From everything I've heard it sounds like Heinola is going to be skating with the team once his quarantine is over so we'll see, really hope they give Niku a legit chance to prove himself, if he does good great and if he fails to then so be it, just hope he's given the opportunity.

That’s not a narrative. Nobody thinks or says that. Sbisa was visibly terrible. Would you like me to prepare a play by play breakdown video for you?
