Sanheim hasn't been 180 pounds in five years. Easily in the 200 pound range now, and looks like he added more muscle in offseason. - bmeltzer
Thank you. I check the websites today trying to find how much certain players weigh, even the Flyers page has weights from 3 years ago, why don’t they update |

Katie did a really good job, knows her hockey and is a super nice person. Hate to see her go.
Taryn has a strong work ethic, and has improved by leaps and bounds in two years. Cool person, too.
Bundy is a friend. Spoke to him the day he was let go (just before Halloween), and we still text and talk by phone. Loved the podcasts we did and enjoyed working with him on Therien's Take for the Flyers' website. I am saddened that time is over, but we remain friends and I know he is passionate about his new work venture. - bmeltzer
you and Bundy had good rapport and were easy to listen to on the podcasts. It’s sad the loss of jobs this past year.

I am sure the first two are wonderful and hard working people Bill, but those attributes, and their gender, was never the original point raised (as those who have the most rudimentary reading ability surely would have discerned).
There are zillions of women with those attributes. When was the last time you saw a woman break in to tv sports journalism who is not all of the 3:
1. Cute. 2. Young. 3. White.
Answer: never.
On an related note, hats off to Red Sox for the hire announced today.
https://www.espn.com/mlb/...ach-professional-baseball
And the analytics team of the Kraken is led by Alexandra Mandrycky, and also has a young Asian woman who is a rising star in the field, who could have easily gone on to work for Wall Street, btw, so stellar apparently was her academic record and mathematical ability.

1. The problem is not the inclusion of women in broadcasts. The problem is these women are all 1. young 2. white 3. attractive and 4. have very little history of having played the sports.
2. Re: your surmise of gender breakup of fan base, whats the weather like in your planet? - PT21
#2 is worthy of discussion
#4 is sexist
#1 and #3 don’t deserve a response...in what world do you live that you think an old and unattractive woman would have any interest in putting herself out there for men to name-call? Not saying that would be right, but it’s reality.

Ha ha.
You want women to be represented because of diversity. Yet, there was a time when men would not have wanted women anywhere near a booth. Here, you are ok with the tampering with the market on grounds of social progressiveness.
But you don't want women who are not cute and young to be there. Because men would not accept it. Here, you are not ok with tampering with the market on grounds of social progressiveness.
Interesting logic, farm man. |

More ignorance from PT21. Apparently you are unaware of minority women who were pioneers in female sports broadcasting. Women such as Jayne Kennedy, Robin Roberts, Lisa Guerrero and Pam Oliver. It seems as though you have a rudimentary knowledge of female sportscasting.

I didn’t say it was right. I didn’t say I agreed. What is it you are hoping for in your criticism? Please explain your “logic.” It is only in the last few years that women have made any real progress in the hockey job market.

Yes, you definitely pointed out its not right. But you justified the current state of the market with the following words
"in what world do you live that you think an old and unattractive woman would have any interest in putting herself out there for men to name-call? Not saying that would be right, but it’s reality."
I am merely pointing out that just like men learned to accept women being part of sports journalism, they will also accept "old and unattractive" women being part of the same.
re: Women's hockey, its been around forever. Decades and decades. In my school, a well-established Men's Ice Hockey program was discontinued, but the women's one continued (Title IX).
We have at least one formerly frequent poster (nastyflyersgirl) who has played in rec leagues and the like for decades. She used to post on the Usenet flyers group in the late 90s. (Along with Hammerby31, the goalie - what happened to that guy btw) |

Caley Chelios is exactly the kind of person that hockey needs more of. She's grew up around the game, played the game, she knows her poop -- she's qualified.
Taryn's got the personality for it, but really no hockey chops. I would love to see that job go to any number of women who actually know the sport. |

Exactement.
I have nothing against pretty women whatsoever.
I just feel it should be an independent variable for the question at hand, maybe a mild correlate. Right now its not. Its pretty much a 1:1.
On that matter, I would like to see more minorities there too. Overall, the sport will benefit as much as will the cause of diversity.

If you say so...likely kicking, screaming and name calling.
Re: your prerequisite that they’ve played the game themselves.
There is several problems with this. First, many male hockey broadcasters and writers did not play the game themselves. In fact, that includes some great ones. Secondly, women have had far less opportunities to play hockey or most sports in a high level competitive team environment. This is particularly true for women over 40. Not that there aren’t any as you mention, but if cost of playing prohibits low income boys from playing, that is even more so for girls. Finally, it doesn’t allow for talent, intelligence and a true passion for the sport to be acceptable enough to have input since...she...well, you know... didn’t play the game, man!

Let them kick, scream, and name-call. Their numbers will be a lot smaller than they think.
Re: your prerequisite that they’ve played the game themselves. - NC Flyers Fan
No, no. Certainly not prerequisite. You did not do the contra-positive correctly.
here is my original statement:
"1. The problem is not the inclusion of women in broadcasts. The problem is these women are all 1. young 2. white 3. attractive and 4. have very little history of having played the sports."
This does not mean that I am advocating for the employment of women who are old, non-white, unattractive and have played the game.
(If I object to conditions A,B,C,D in simultaneity that does not mean I favor not A,not B, Not C and not D in simultaneity).
