Defined benefit pensions were converted to defined contribution pensions (workers were told that it "gave them more control over their finances - the most horrid lie ever told to workers), and defined contribution plans were simply eliminated.

Their conversation was around taking SoFi public via Chamath’s SPAC and this idea came up within the context of that conversation. The only other stipulation, apart from not being able to take it out until retirement, was that it would need to be invested in US Equities.


And I totally agree with DB vs. DC. My company takes care of a lot of the largest states’ pension funds and a lot of companies’ employees’ DC target retirements, so I’m very familiar with this space. They’re doing something similar with health care plans. High deductible health insurance plans is another way employers are passing the expenses of keeping those employees, onto the employees themselves. It’s a shame, really. Those plans can leave you paying a hefty sum out of pocket every year.
