I'm told the #NHL has informed teams that when submitting Opening Night rosters by Tues. at 5pm ET, any changes made Wed. (for LTIR purposes) will count as if they were originally submitted on Tuesday. This is an interesting wrinkle for teams, because

The league feels that teams were not accurately reflecting their Opening Night rosters in their original submission and were "undermining" or "circumventing" the idea of it with changes shortly thereafter.

Teams don't want to operate in LTIR all season, so they like to get as close to the cap as possible for Day 1 (Tuesday) and THEN add their players to LTIR on Day 2 (Wednesday) to maximize the benefit.

It's interesting this year because a number of the teams that play on Wed. plan to be cap compliant using LTIR: Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Vancouver, Edmonton and Chicago.

This may force an opening night roster that team/coach may not have planned - at least for the first day.

So what exactly does this mean for teams? Basically just less players? Van would need to create 1.5M in cap space.

No Hamonic.

SKA president Roman Rotenberg tells me that the reports are not true, Vasily Podkolzin is not being dropped to lower league "It is fake news, they made the stories up. Vasily will stay with us, he is on the team and will play for us tomorrow."

Rick Dhaliwal
@DhaliwalSports
Rotenberg did admit that there were contract talks with Podkolzin this season to extend his contract.

Rotenberg is aware of the reports that Podkolzin will sign with the Canucks when his contract is up with SKA on April 30th, "We are focusing on the playoffs right now"

Rotenberg says he talked with Podkolzin today about the stories and Vasily told him that he did not know where they came from.

Rotenberg knows hockey crazy mad would like to see Podkolzin get more ice time, "You have to earn your ice time, Vasily is in important player for us."

Just means more players on waivers. The idea would be to get as close to the cap max to get biggest savings on LTIR. Teams just have to go to a 20 man roster to start day one. All teams should be okay except TB?

It means Ferland goes on LTIR on day 2 instead of day 1. Hamonic misses a game.

But typical NHL changing rules because someone tricked Gary

So doubt Hoglander is going to play game 1 as well.

Canucks will have to put Chatfield, Brisebois, Sautner all on waivers as well.

I think he stays. Graovac Bailey Sven Rathbone and a few more . We will find out in a few minutes.

They were going to have them on waivers anyways. Other teams have to expose some players .

Or they just run a 21 man roster for opening day? Put Loui and Benn on waivers, have Ferland on the roster, and sign Hamonic tomorrow?

Not sure if that's even feasible, though.

Good thread.

The rules for #Canucks fans playing around on
@CapFriendly
: you can capture LTI space, sign and recall players after setting your Opening Night roster but before puck drop Wednesday.

You can’t send anyone down before Game 1 if they’re on your opening night roster

They will have to sign Hamonic Thursday same as LTIR for Ferland

I just tried it at Cap Friendly, so take it with a grain of salt because I have no idea if it's correct, but....

If you put LE, Beagle, Benn, Baertschi, and everyone else to the minors/taxi squad, you can keep Ferland on the opening night roster and have 1.9 in cap space. Not sure what the deal for Hamonic is though, if it's less than that.

Would make more sense to throw 3 guys who save the entire 1.075M on waivers and play Hoglander.

I could see the Canucls grabbing a 3rd string goalie if a cheap one comes on the market via waivers. I figure MD is best to stay in the AHL all season?

Hamonic would need to be 1M exactly then to have Hoggie and his 894K play otherwise short forward.

Why's that? If they have 1.9 mil in cap space, couldn't he be anything under that?

Just saw your edit. My CapFriendly roster had Hoglander on it.

Reasonable. Don't foresee anyone getting claimed.
