It’s all relative, in 2015/16 Crosby & Malkin’s combined salaries took up 25% of the cap, two of the best in the game and highest paid that year, last year McDavid & Draisaitl’s combined salaries took up 25% of the cap.

Having a couple highly paid players, who are really good, doesn’t screw your cap situation, overpaying mid-level and non performing players does.

Overpaying anyone is going to screw up a cap situation, everything is super tight for any competitive team with star players. It's just a lot harder to pay anyone else if you're taking up that entire 25% every 5 years.

Toronto pays 3 players over 13% of the cap and have 9 players making under 1.2%.

I almost forgot. Before Covid hit Nick Backstrom signed a 5 year deal for 9.2M

True, but most teams have someone who’s overpaid. In most cases you’ve got two guys who are really highly paid, usually the best players, and then you have your second tier guys just like Pittsburgh did back in 2015/16. They had Crosby and Malkin at the top level and then at 6.8 million they had Kessel and 7.25 million they had Letang.

Toronto’s problem is one of their $11 million players isn’t a high in defenseman, Mitch Marner should be one of those second-tier guys not a top-tier guy.

I wasn’t talking about the Canucks, but more so, just saying that because you have two highly paid players doesn’t screw your salary cap situation. Just a generic comment, but good on you for coming to their defence on a continual basis.

Kessel was signed for 8M, Toronto is still paying him 1.2M

You have to pay a player what he's worth. Until last season Matthews was .97 and Marner was .93.

Marner's taking 600K less per season and in the 6th year probably about 3M less than Marner after Matthews signs a new contract.

Maybe, but I think Marner is a better all round player then Matthew's, not a silly sulky little female dog.

Then their's us, LE, Sutter, Beagle and Roussel are all 4th liners on a good team.

Combined they cost 16.5m of the 81.5m cap or 20 percent of the cap.
That's a bigger problem then having three top end players making 31m

Not if you like watching Seattle go 3 and out or seeing Wilson getting sacked

I've always liked good defence and ball running. I think you got to run to keep the defence honest.

He's good in quick throw situations, but with his lack of confidence and any semblance of pressure he's been terrible.

Thumb surgery 12 days ago. He’s definitely not 100%.

People don't seem to realize that the cap has been going up every year until this year. Bergeron signed his contract at a cap percentage is 10.69%, 7 years later his cap hit only costs them 8.4% of the cap.

Same with Crosby's 14.50% is now only worth 10.7% of today's cap.

Players that sign an 8 year deal are going to want their piece of the future pie.

It's these 5 year deals that are signed at absolute max cap percentages. They aren't like Crosby or Bergeron that after 5 years later are missing out on 2-3M a season.

Didn't Crosby get like 12 years or something like that?

Tough looking mascot. A prime Lasorda would have kicked it's ass through the uprights in less than a minute.
