Comparing Liljegren to a former Norris trophy winner is a stretch.
I'm not saying we dump him, but I am saying that I don't see anything in his game that demonstrates NHL worthy play. Not just now, since he's only 21 - I don't see it in his tool kit. Maybe you've seen it where I haven't - but I don't even see the skating, which his supposed to be his best asset. - Monkeypunk
30 points in 40 games on a weak Marlie team with terrible goaltending. Has way more potential than Dermott IMO. Not a stretch in the comparison, Carlyle produced less at the same age for the Dallas Black Hawks (Leafs CHL team) - look it up. |

Dermott is so far disappointing. Liljegren will be an NHL d-man. A bit of Leaf history. Leafs in the 70's and 80's were generally very bad. Many first rounders gifted away for little return, especially no patience on developing d-men. In 1976 the Leafs did not have a first rounder, they picked up a player named Randy Carlyle at #30 in the second round. He struggled in the first two years and was traded to the Pens (at age 22) for next to nothing where he won a Norris in 1980. D-men in many cases take longer. RHD that skates well, has a decent shot and is 21 years old. - winsix
Seems like there are some scouts that see some top pairing/top 4 potential with Liljegren...I have never been a huge fan but there are enough opinions and people putting in the work to prove it for me to consider that something might be there. |

You and your BFF Santo were upset at me for saying Loljegren wasn't developing at the pace we hoped. - Arctic_AARDVARK
Quite wrong.
I have never been confident in Liljegren, it is changing though. |

It was me that disagreed with that, not sure if those other two did or not.
And I still disagree with it because unlike most in this thread, I actually watch the Marlies games, both on line and in person (not anymore, I guess ).
Liljegren has been not only their best d-man, but their best player 2 years running. I've maintained all along that I don't know whether or not it'll translate to the NHL (I'm hopeful it does), but from a development standpoint, he's done nothing but improve. Despite several massive injuries he has sustained.

Let’s weigh the positives of a 21 year old defensive prospect. Of note, we also have to consider some injury issues.
Good skater
Good puck handling skills
Good shot
Good hockey IQ
Good work ethic
Willing to learn the defensive game
Committed to above
Calm demeanour
Patient
Seems to understand what it will take to make it
He’s only 21
Seems like quite a bit there to see this through a little longer. |

Excellent and consistent post. Liljegren has good potential in my view and the return would not be worth moving him. By comparison, Juolevi on Vancouver is expected to be a regular and was picked at #5 a year before Liljegren and had less production than Liljegren in the AHL.

The thought with him when he as drafted was that he was going to become a PP offensive D man...He has flipped that right around.
I want to wait and see with him but my mind has changed, I think he is a guy we hold onto OR at least get decent value for at the TDL for a good player with term.

If he or his agent aren’t female doging and moaning, asking for a trade, what’s the rush? Unless he gets legitimately surpassed by a bunch of recently drafted D, why would the Leafs give up on their investment? I go to a number of Marlie games with my dad, and watch as many games as I can on Leafs TV. Lilly is/was the guy on that team at 21.

This TDL will be an interesting one for the Leafs and if Timmy helps us bring back a really good player then its something they should consider. |

Absolutely, but I doubt the Leafs take including Lilly lightly. They rightfully have to consider short, mid, and long term plans knowing nothing is forever, and situations/players change.
I think Lilly’s biggest hurdle is confidence...that can change at the drop of a hat...or never. |

There's a massive group of players on the NHL waiver wire today, including Louis Domingue (CGY), Adam Cracknell (EDM) and Seth Griffith (EDM), Noah Juulsen (MTL), Alex Belzile (MTL), Charlie Lindgren (MTL), Xavier Ouellet (MTL), Jordan Weal (MTL) and Josh Ho-Sang (NYI). |

Nope, I think they’ve decided now. Trade his young ass out of here for a wiley vet. No use for cheap D men in a cap constrained world. |

I made that comment the day they drafted him. There was a reason so many passed on him. Leaf fans flipped out and insisted they got the steal of the draft. - TurdFergeson
Ya, that sounds about right.
But draft day is a little early to label him a bust. |

I remember when we had luke schenn and then Kool aid drinkers in here loved him and said most dmen take at least until 28 to reach their potential.
Lili is 21, id say we shouldn't give up on him jsut yet. Unless a great deal comes our way. |
