Their defence is somewhat like our defence, it's not terrible, but it's not great either. So I'm not sure he'll be better because of it, also, the Canucks consistently gave up the most scoring chances and shots of all the NHL teams last year.

Markstrom was a huge reason for them being a bubble team, I'm hopeful Demmer and Holtby can fill that gap, but I'm not convinced at this point because I'm not a total homer like most on here...shoot me

The Canucks did give up the most shots. They played a lot in their own end. They let 3 of the D walk because they could not generate scoring chances and play longer in the other end.

Clarke will have Holtby's game dialed in. If anything Marky will roll back a bit with an entirely new system of coaches, defensive structures, and such. He will help CGY for sure when healthy but that groin issue...yipes...
- LordHumungous

+1

I trust Clarke more than anything, his resume is sparkling. He'll have Holtby playing better than he has these past couple seasons, and Marky will have some issues adjusting I think (based off his career arc).

Marky will still be the better goalie at the end of the day, but I don't think it's going to be dropping off a cliff like people are suggesting.

Holtby could be better than Marky or Marky could be better. It’s 50/50. All this noise about us sucking is complete bs. Goaltending is the most fickle position in sports and I wouldnt be surprised if Markstrom stunk it up in calgary. At least we have two competent tenders if one falters
- CanuckDon

Best case scenario is the forward group plays better defensively, the neutral zone gap between the forwards and defence was way too wide open all of last year, which takes the pressure off the goaltending.

Our improved D should offset any downgrade in goal. I’d bet on it (and already have)

Playing well defensively isn't purely a product of the defencemen, the forward group is just as responsible as the D.

I got in on that too, but didn't get in early enough. Bought at $30 and sold at $45, still made out well. Tip from a broker I know who's a member at the course I play.

Thanks for adding in the dashes, that was confusing as hell at first

The Canucks have a top 3 D group in the division I think. Calgary are good, Toronto and Montreal are top heavy.

That third pairing on Edmonton is like two halves of one good defenseman

Is that the same Virtanen that you said scored 18 goals last year and that would be a better option than Toffoli ? Asking for a friend

I agree, Marky played a huge role with where we wound up last season.

It's not about being a homer. I just think people are looking for a drop in quality starts that isn't there. We've got 2 guys that are more than capable of carrying the team through the rough patches.
