From 08 to 18 Ontario was considered a have not province and received transfer payments from the federal government. Most of which came from the oil sands.
In 2018 the feds informed Ontario that they were no longer considered to be a have not province the Ontario government protested and wanted the feds to change the way they did their calculations. - shack67
I'm not going to rip you a new one, because Equalization is the most misunderstood thing about Confederation, and the press has willfully done a terrible job of explaining it to people over the years.
So I'll explain it to you in a simple way:
Imagine each province went to a bar to watch the Leafs homeopener.
20 beers were ordered.
PEI drank 1 beer.
Ontario drank 3 beers.
Alberta didn't drink any beers.
Quebec drank 12 beers.
NS, NF and NB each also drank a beer.
So the bill comes, and Ontario is forced to pay for 12 beers. Alberta is forced to pay for 8.
Quit saying Ontario drank for free, or that other provinces paid for some of our beers.
And it wouldn't kill you to say thanks for the free beer, no? |

you're wrong with your evaluation of Holtby - he is likely to be a Vezina candidate this season.
In addition -- Hoglander will be good for them (I have him as a Calder winner) and Pettersson will only get better.
Strong goaltending (one of the best tandems in the league) a good defense and two good top2 fw lines -- to me it's between Toronto and Vancouver for the #1 spot in the Scotia NHL® North Division - MaximusAurelius
i hate agreeing with you but
additions of:
hoglander
hamonic
Improvement of:
Petterson
Hughes (!!)
JT Miller out for 2 weeks but he's a very good player
and tbh their D is
Edler
Schmidt
Hughes
Hamonic
Myers
and then whoever
Their D can realistically shelter poopty goaltending for a bit
IMO

How about looking at the other side of the coin also.
2018 Ontario 3rd in federal contributions per capita
Last in Federal transfers per capita.
Don't even start painting a picture of Ontario somehow not pulling its own weight. - Aetherial
That’s not what I was saying at all. Alberta has been the engine that has been running the country for longer than most remember.
Ontario was considered a have-not province for ten straight years. That’s a fact. |

that's the way social systems in developed countries work..
within ontario one could make the case of toronto vs other cities/towns as well, so where do you start/end with that discussion??

I agree, I also think North division is pretty crap in terms of good teams. TOR,CGY, MTL should have no problems being the top 3 teams. - Santo_44
I think Edmonton could be reasonably placed ahead of both CGY and MTL. |

Dude Holtby has sucked the past 2 seasons.

I wouldn't dismiss Vancouver or Edmonton. Vancouver is worse in some areas, but they are growing within from their youth at the same time. If Demko continues as he did in the playoffs, they'll be good. I expect some bumps, so I don't know if they're there yet or not. Edmonton's goaltending, for all that it sucks, was still much better than ours last year - so ruling them out when they have 2 Hart winners is a tough thing to do as well.

It’s also the way the nhl works. Without the rich teams supporting the poor teams we wouldn’t have a league.
If the leafs for some reason couldn’t have fans in the stands for two years they would need and get assistance. |

Dear referee:
Sorry for flagging this post, but I had no other idea how to get in touch with you.
Every year, the Leafs regulars here post our predictions for the upcoming season in a separate thread. We've been doing it for about five years now.
This year, it's located here:
https://hockeybuzz.com/bo...p?thread_id=169928&page=1
To ensure the integrity of the predictions, every year a ref locks it when the puck drops on the Leafs' opening game.
Normally this task is performed by the regular Leafs referees, but nobody has seen or heard from them in months.
So could I please ask you to go in and lock the thread tonight?
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT DELETE THE THREAD!!! Just lock it.
Thanks - I owe you a beer.
And it would be great if you could DM me to let me know you've read this and can do it for us.
Once again, thanks. |

There’s no provincial equalization system - Canada Cup
Well, there isn't an official one with a catchy title and snazzy binders and meetings every year, but the tax revenues on commercial real estate in Toronto will disagree with your statement. |

It’s also built into specific federal programs and transfers where they will construct allocation formulas to benefit specific regions and provinces. EI was designed that way with different eligibility requirements and benefit periods that end up producing inter regional transfers

All tax systems have that effect. That’s one of a number of the goals of tax policy. Equalization only has one goal. |
