As much as I loved Yzerman, I'd take Gretzky over him or any player. #99 is the GOAT in my opinion. - gergeswillems
Do you know why he wore #99? Because his idol was Gordie, but Gretzky didn't feel himself worthy of #9.
Now, let me say that I enjoy a little physical plqy in a physical game. Gretzky got in 1 fight then McSorely jumped in to save him....My point? Gretzky couldn't take care of himself when the play got rough so The Oil had to dedicate a guy to being his protector. Not begrudging that, but I always felt a player should be able to carry his own lunch-pail.
Each generation of player in every sport is different, normally lead by a "generational talent". Gordie, Gretzky, etc....I don't think Gretzky is the GOAT. He dang sure was for his generation, and he literally, single-handedly changed hockey. But not the GOAT; That designation, dear friends, is debateable but for me (opinion only, G) it is Gordie. He could score, assist, and fight/play physical and change the flow of the game by stepping on the ice. And he played into his 70s over 6 decades - Gretzky didn't but he's, to me, GOAT.1... |

Wayne Gretzky had more career assists (1963) than Jaromir Jagr had career points (1921). Jagr is 2nd in NHL scoring history.
Gretzky also scored 894 goals in 280 fewer games (1767 to 1487) than Gordie Howe (801 goals). Gretzky also scored 1007 more points than Howe did. 2857 to 1850.
Gretzky's playoffs stats are just as amazing. Goals (122), assists (260), points (382). In 208 games. Gordie Howe scored 160 points in 157 playoff games.
Stats aren't everything. And it's very hard comparing eras. But Gretzky has basically lapped the field. He literally achieved everything a hockey player could possibly achieve. |

Also played in an era where goalies stood tall and looked like twigs. Give him modern day equipment and training, he probably still has great numbers but not even close to what he had.
I feel for Ovi. Has a legitimate shot to break one of 99s records. Has to deal with lockouts and COVID shortened seasons. Say what you want about his all around game. The dude can put the puck in the net. |

I'd like to see Ovechkin break Gretzky's goals record. I think he can still do it. He's at 706 right now. So 189 more to go. |

I think CF is wrong. I haven't read anything about a DD injury? Not that it would be surprising. - gergeswillems

I floated this earlier:
Florida wants to move Yandle......Yandle (retain $1M+ 1st) for DeKeyser's crutches.
But seriously, would Stevie go for Yandle with a sweetener and a salary retention of at least $1M?????
OR>>>>> Yandle + Spencer Knight for (drum roll)......Cholo |

Florida isn't even going to play Yandle. New GM Bill Zito said as much. He has a NTC with 2 years left on his contract. Have to think he'll be traded soon. Tyler Johnson is on Tampa's taxi squad. |

If it wasn't for all the BS he has had with everything it would be more like 100 to go, possibly next season being the year. |

All very valid points, G. Never said stats were everything. Am a firm believer that to be considered GOAT, one has to revolutionize the game (Jonah Lomu in rugby, for example...). As I stated, they're generational, but comparison is very hard to do outside of generations....regardless, 99 didn't play nearly as long which is one of those non-stat factors. Please don't misunderstand, I like 99, amazing player...but there are so many pother things surrounding him that just, to me, seems to lower his GOAT status to GOAT.1.....But truly, Gordie & 99 are legendary.....Love having these discussions (once had one with a guy about Al Kaline v Norm Cash v Willie Horton v Lance Parrish/Jason Thompson...fun discussion). I don't begrudge any opinions on GOAT for any sport, each person has their own criteria and discriminators, and 99% of them are valid!
