My guess is he was aiming at, at least, 6M.

Which is too much for him.

Hopefully he comes to reason and signs for 5.

- Scabeh

perhaps he's looking at 5.5M, or wants 7 years...

Not surprised by those numbers, they seem fair, been saying for a while that pageau is the right comparable.

Since he’s happy keeping his wingers thanks to the arrival of the new guys, maybe he’ll change his mind money wise if a) the season goes well enough and b) someone makes him realize that there isnt that much money out there because yeah flat cap and pandemic

- Karine Hains

Imagine if Poehling starts on fire in the AHL once it starts.

That would be a whole world of pressure on him to sign with every other centre in the organization playing well.

perhaps both camps aren't really far apart but it does sound like he's in greedy mode... surprising considering the fiancial circumstances, I doubt Danault has that much leverage.
- Pat1993

He's a UFA in a few months and may want to test the market when he hits it. Teams are always looking to add a C.

I don't think he sees himself as a Habs long term at this point.

Habs offered Danault 6 years @ 5M. He turned it down. (According to Brunet)

Habs were even willing to add a little money but never got a counter offer from Danault.

Yeah, he's in greedy mode.

I don’t know if it’s the money, or what’s going to be asked of him.

maybe, but testing the market right now doesn't sound like such a good idea, even if teams are always looking for Cs. I have the impression he wants to stay, and that they're not so far apart in their negotiations.

I’m not sure if I’d keep Danault. He’s a good player, hard worker and a solid PK guy but I think guys like Suzuki, Evans, Toffoli, Lehkonen can play that role.

I’d rather have an offensive & playoff performer like PLD then him. But losing Danault for free at the end of the year might taste bad.

In the article, it mentions the role wouldn't be a problem anymore since the top 9 is now pretty good.

Bergevin said less than two weeks ago that he doesnt know if Poehling will be a centre or a winget at the nhl level...so i’m thinking Poehling is far from ready unfortunately...

So far Poehling is in the taxi squad...but maybe the Habs are waiting to see what's really going to happen with the AHL. Schedule was supposed to be out today but Canadian teams are in waiting mode because Ontario Public Health still hasn't given the green light

While I understand the idea of keeping the wing option open for Poehling since there's a logjam at centre.

I have seen nothing out of Poehling on the wing that suggests he's more comfortable in that position than at centre.

But that's just my opinion I guess.

6X5M is perfect for him.

If the kids keep playing well, hell if Poehling would have a good start in the AHL.

He might end up with nothing on the table.

And while saying that, I really appreciate Phil and what he brings to the table.

Overpaying him long term makes no sense.

- Scabeh

He will get paid if not here, elsewhere.

But maybe not much more than that offer.

This. The guy wants ice time. He said so himself at the end of last season.

I don't think this is only or mainly about $$$.

I think it was more about not having a strictly defensive role than having enough ice time

Voila, like i said in my blog in october, IF they manage to sign him it will be because he’s buying in to what’s happening in mtl right now: https://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=107968

Hopefully that guy will play at some point and not just sit there in that taxi squad all season long. He will never be ready if he's not playing, be it in the nhl or in another league.

and if he's still not buying in, despite the team's current performances, well I guess there's no convincing him and he'll go play somewhere else
