Better than Kane, Toews, Sharp and Hossa? I mean it was close I guess since Richards and Carter that year each had 30+ goals, but Chicago was better coached, had a better goalie (Antti Niemi of all people), more scorers and better defensive depth. They were 24 points better than the Flyers in the regular season and they proved ultimately they were the better team with 3 cups in 6 seasons to our 0. Do teams get lucky from time to time, get hot at the right moment, sure they do, but more often than not, the better team prevails. - jd250
Yes better than that. Flyers had Pronger Timonen Briere Hartnell Giroux Richards Carter Gagne JVR, coburn Betts , Lapierre and Leino and Carle had great seasons, Flyers took them to Game 6 despite AHL level goaltending. Like I said in the original post. If we had any mediocre goalie like Emery, Biron or Even Bryzgalov were in net that cup was ours.
Stop using the regular season as proof. Regular season means nothing in playoffs. How many times does the president trophy winner take home the cup? Not that often. It doesnt matter how well you do in the regular season. Playoffs are a brand new season |

If I was you I would reassess. The Flyers forward group was not better than the Hawks. Neither was their defense. The core of the Hawks won 3 Stanley Cups. That Flyers team made one run before being broken up.
That Hawks team of forwards featured 3 Hall of famers and 6 20 goal scorers. |

The Giroux Patrick TK line was notieceably giving the Devils fits at times.
Can't remember the last time I saw 3 RH forwards on a Flyers line.

The "argument" we had about JVR was about his ability to score goals at ES. You stated that Hextall was stupid to think that he could. We also determined that you were uninformed about his ES goal scoring ability. What does his +/- have to do with his ability to score at ES? How does his +/- support your claim that Hextall was stupid to expect JVR to score at ES and that he was just a PP goal scorer?
We can already see what you have been reduced to with your responses. - MJL
Listen ... Bottom line ... do you think it was a good move for Hextall to sign JVR for 5 years at $7M per? I don't care about the stats, I care about what my eyes see, and I agree with the other poster who said Toronto was instantly better the day JVR signed with the Flyers. JVR is a slow, streaky and passive player, and THAT is the reason why Toronto didn't keep him. You can quote stats, and salary cap, or whatever you want, but the bottom line is if Toronto felt JVR was part of the solution, they would have kept him! Since I live near Boston, I knew what JVR was before he even left UNH and came to the Flyers. In fact the Flyers were pissed that JVR did NOT want to sign a contract with the Flyers after his first college season, but opted to stay in college for a 2nd year. What kid who is serious about fulfilling his dream to be an NHL player opts to do this?? This told me all I needed to know about who JVR was and thus explains why I think Hextall was STUPID to resign him. I thought so when it happened 3 years ago, and nothing has changed my mind about that.

Strawman argument and you're attempting to change the subject. Not going to work. The ignorance is astounding. It has been explained to you why Toronto did not keep JVR. It has become clear no matter how much the simplest of concepts is explained to you, you wont get it. You don't even know what you yourself said. Your comment was not that Hextall was stupid to sign JVR. Your comment was that he was stupid to expect JVR to score ES goals and that he was just a PP goal scorer. You were proven wrong. If you want to discuss the merits of the signing itself, that is a different conversation.

some truth about JVR but how have the leafs become this better team? I am sure you have said the Flyers need to win a few PO series to be good? No? The Leafs have accomplished what? If they didn't hit all those lotto picks aka Matthews, they would be heading where? Nothing against Patrick but if the Flyers lucked into Matthews, where would they be? JVR at 5X7 is definitely an overpay but that is what FA's get. You don't build a team around JVR, you build a line around him and let him score. I have not looked them up but when considering his injuries his scoring rate has been good. If JVR has not hit his potential it is a lot to do with the players the Flyers have to put around him and him. The only part of the contract I liked was the 5 years, that term was not over the top. Or maybe he should be like McDavid and win the cup on his own
