Called the sweep so headed to Vegas tomorrow (in my mind).
Jan - Feb 24 games in 47 days
March - April 32 games in 69 days
By Tuesday they will have played four of their seven back to backs
If they can get through this road trip with some wins, should be well positioned to push for the rest of the season.

If they can win 5 or 6 of their 8 remaining games against Calgary then the playoffs are a guarantee IMHO. Gets tougher if they don’t win/tie the season series. |

So the Ottawa series is over now onto real competition, any predictions on the next week of games. Winnipeg, Montreal 😬, and Toronto 🥴🤢🤮. |

Jets — 0/1 (could go either way)
Canadiens — 1/2 (Demko steals one)
Leafs — 1/3 (better matchup for the ‘Nucks? Leafs have not great D & goaltending...hoping they take 2 of 3, but probably overmatched)
Then it gets really interesting with four in a row vs the Flames. Almost like a play-in series! |

The exact reason why I would hate having a subscription to the athletic. People are dumb. - manvanfan
I'm not here to beat The Athletic drum, but it's a paywall for a reason: they have actual good writers and insiders who put out articles that you can't get elsewhere, for any team and league. If you're a fan of multiple teams over multiple leagues, it's a gold mine.
Sure, there are Pronman and the local guys who cover the local teams, but they're still way better connected than anything you'll find on the free sites. Plus the actual in-depth articles (behind the scenes in the NFL's BLM videos with Goodell, NHL sexual abuse coverage, etc.) are just really interesting reads for sports fans.
Anyways, back to it. |

Not sure if it was mentioned before, but apparently Mike Gillis' son accidently butt-tweeted out a link to his dad's pitch for the Penguins GM job (which has subsequently be taken down):
From The Athletic/The Armies:
Here’s the short version.
At around 3 p.m. PST (Petey Standard Time), Spencer Gillis tweeted out a link to a Google document that was essentially a giant presentation on behalf of Mike Gillis to the Pittsburgh Penguins, about how Michael Gillis would use the lessons learned from his time in Vancouver to have an even more successful run with a new club if given the chance.
The Penguins, for those unaware, saw their general manager Jim Rutherford step down from his role with the team earlier in the day, citing personal reasons. This of course created an open spot in the endless game of “Will Dale Tallon get another job in management?” we seem to play so often.
Spencer deleted the link half an hour later, citing the oft-used butt dial excuse (somewhere Jake Virtanen is nodding in solidarity), which may or may not be true. If we are to believe Anna Paquin in Flack, everything is a PR move, so who knows what to believe?
But even if it was accidental, showing that your dad wants another shot at an NHL job (which is known) and is incredibly well prepared to take on a new job (which is known) isn’t a bad thing, nor is it exactly revealing huge secrets usually reserved for when Dan Brown needs a new summer home.
It would be like me accidentally revealing that The Athletic has submitted Thomas Drance for the sexiest beat writer in the Pacific Northwest award. Sure, maybe we should have kept it under wraps, but is anybody really surprised?
And the Google document put Gillis over in a big way, as it really was a good read. Pro sports don’t seem to lend themselves to well written, detailed game plans for future success, they tend to rely more on rubbing some dirt in it and going about their day. But if a team was looking for a comprehensive vision for the future, Mike Gillis could very well be their guy.
The document detailed his organizational hierarchy plans, a different approach to drafting and scouting, creating more high end jobs (multiple AGMs), using the lessons he learned from his successes and failures in Vancouver, and I don’t know if it got into the snacks in the break room because the document was removed, but I’m pretty sure it mentioned a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables to go along with the donuts.
You thought Gillis drafted poorly? He agrees that was a failure of his, but he has a plan to improve that. Maybe he loved Cobra Kai because he envisions a team with competing dojos two scouting teams in order to increase the amount of information coming in on potential prospects.
The man even made a new organizational chart.
Do you know how you show you mean business? You make a god damn org chart.
That’s the equivalent of Maximus slaughtering another opponent in the Colosseum and asking if the crowd is entertained. It catches the eye and gets the people talking.
You want power lines that speaks to the heart of a big section of Canucks Nation?
“When you run a meritocracy like I ran, people got to say what was on their minds and it was appreciated. I like the idea of getting another group of people together to create a team that can do special things.
“I want collaboration. I want people to speak up, I want them to express their opinion. I’m a firm believer that isolation is a killer in professional sports. If you isolate yourself, and you’re not getting every piece of relevant information, then you’re going to make bad decisions.”
These are just the power lines meant to grab your attention, but there was also an entire breakdown of the roles he envisioned for the scouts, AGMs, marketing and more, which went very in depth.
In short, it was pretty convincing.
Now, Mike Gillis is tied to this city forever because he was at the head of the most successful Canucks team of all time, but also one that fell just short of a Stanley Cup.
As a result, he has many fans in this city, but because they lost, he also has his detractors.
But the point of this isn’t to debate his legacy in Vancouver. We can save that argument for every other Thursday like we normally do.
No, the point of this section is to highlight that I think the NHL is a better place with the Mike Gillis’ of the world in it. Even if you’re an old school guy, someone who thinks Pierre McGuire is the right guy for the job because he knows every hometown that has ever existed, I would hope we could agree there is something to be said for having different approaches in professional hockey management.
Give me a world where people are trying different tactics to win, and seeing which one comes out on top. Give me someone who wants to try and evolve the game of hockey instead of just always sticking with “what works.” It makes life a far more interesting place when you have someone willing to mix things up.
There was a time when Mike Gillis utilizing a sleep doctor was laughed at because, hey, just rub some dirt in it. But now, more and more sports are embracing sleep doctors and that kind of outside the box thinking.
In a league that is very hard to win in, surely there has to be a place for someone trying to find any competitive edge they can get, even if it means going against tradition.
EDIT: Someone screenshot the whole thing. If you're interested in reading Gillis' dissertation, it's pretty good: https://imgur.com/a/Rxx2Hmf << (he wants two competing scouting groups) |

Most people prefer to get their news from Facebook, that way they know that they’ll read all about the things they already “know”. |

He has probably had that typed up for years now.
I guess if you are going to try and implement new ideas, do them all |
