If they take gio it would be most helpful.
Sadly, long term you need to expose Markstrom to avoid years 3 through 6... but he has a nmc doesn't he?

Markstrom isn't 35 and hasn't played a ton. No reason to think he can't be a solid goalie for 5-6, especially if they can keep Rittich around as a decent backup.

He's signed until he's 36yo at 6m with a NMC. He'll be fine for 2 or 3 years and you're right, he's never played a ton, that's why I'm glad we walked away from him.
I'm not sold on Rittich to play 20 to 30 percent.

I like Marky, he's just finally hit his stride, but his full body of work doesn't lend him to be a career elite goalie.
Beware of year 4,5 and 6, it could get ugly.

There's no real reason to think Markstrom can't be a great goalie for 5 more years. You can make the exact same argument for every UFA contract signed and most of them are fine.

Rittich has been amazing as a backup in his career and only struggled as a number one. If Wolf can at least be a 1b in a few years, Markstrom's contract won't matter since Wolf will be making nothing. 6 million isn't crippling once the cap starts going up again.

Yes, I've come to know what bad goalie contracts look like.
Sadly you can't even blame this one on the NHL changing the rules after the fact, instead it's just seems to be a lack of simple front office competence....
