Not sure how Seattle would have any problems? They can take whoever they want that isn't protected – so prospects are still up for grabs (like Lind). I'm pretty sure they can take guys on the last year (month) of their deal too, so won't even count against their cap.

Don't think Seattle will have any cap problems at all.

Okay so Canucks move Jake and get back a draft pick . They protect Lind and the only ones not protected are Holtby Schmidt and Myers. Everyone else is protected. That would be a 4.2 mil contract at minimum .

Fla could protect their young players and leave Hornqvist at 5.3 . TBL could lead Sergachev for 4.8 .

I am not saying Benning would do it but the possibility is there that Seattle have to chose Myers Holtby or Schmidt.I think a lot of teams this time around will use it as a salary dump.

Why would we expose Schmidt though? And who would we protect instead? Right now I have it as:

Schmidt, OJ, X (Chatfield maybe?) (Hughes I think is exempt?)

Actually, you are both wrong, all of the 16 teams that make it into the playoffs, have a shot at being punted in the 1st round.
That equals 100%.

Ya, Rafferty 100% expose, they won't take him. Schmidt is someone to keep. If you don't like him, he has value as a trade chip after the expansion. I also think Rafferty is exempt currently unless he plays 40 games.
If JV is traded, his forward group is not bad, toss up between Gaudette and Zack.

The Canucks will probably go the eight skater route considering how valuable defenceman are in the West. You can't under any circumstances lose anymore NHL defencemen than we have.

You guys are missing the point. Yes Schmidt will more than likely be protected . The discussion was I could expose only high cost players if I wanted to. If Schmidt has a really bad year Canucks could make it that the only NHL talent unprotected would be a high cost player.

I am not saying they are going to do it.

Hypothetically, sure, probable, no. I don't think money is of a big concern to Benning, obviously, he's mismanaged it so poorly. Icing a competitive team is IMO first and foremost on his mind....I would think?

I protect Myers over Schmidt, although I do think Schmidt is a good #5, he isn't as good as many claim he is.

I have seen Rafferty play for 10 minutes but reports on him are very high , but I can't endorse any of it seeing I have not seen him.

One poster made a comment yesterday we already have Hughes leave him unprotected.

If he is close to Hughes skill you absolutely protect him IMO
