Who is left ? I will give my protected list
Petey Miller Brock Bo Zack Lind Motte
OJ Chatfield Rafferty
Demko - VANTEL
Virtanen or Pearson? Hamonic maybe? There's nothing to say they won't take someone on an expiring deal.
If that were the list and I'm Seattle I'm taking either Schmidt or JV.
Edit: I see you said trade JV ahead of time. Don't see it happening. |

I protect Myers over Schmidt, although I do think Schmidt is a good #5, he isn't as good as many claim he is. - Reubenkincade

I will stick to our discussion of last night and wait and see how the year plays out. If he plays like he played in the first two weeks I would be okay to let him go but he is also getting better every game.
I don't see a need to protect Myers seeing I doubt Seattle would select him. |

I doubt Seattle claims a soon-to-be UFA. And it would be even worse if we protected him. All it gains them is a couple extra weeks to try and sign him, with no guarantee. |

You need to protect him because you can't afford to lose him! Elder, Schmidt and Myers are the only Canucks dmen with veteran NHL experience that can still play the game and eat minutes. That have to be protected. |

You really haven't noticed how much better Myers has been since Schmidt joined his side? It's not a coincidence that Edler Schmidt pairing was good and now Schmidt has made Myers not a train wreck. |

If they take Pearson or Hamonic then that is a win seeing neither will be here next year and basically may not sign in Seattle.
As you mentioned Jake was traded.
This is just a hypothetical but I would keep Jake and expose him in the Edraft and I would be fine to see him selected. If they didn't take him I would trade him for any draft pick even a late round one.

Not sure if you read the link i posted last thread, but there was a reason why Vegas got rid of him and it had very little to do with cap. He just isn't as good as some people think he is. |

Losing Myers in expansion would be great for the team in the long run, no question. His contract is a disaster and he is replaceable via free agency should that cap space be freed up. |

A big part of the discussion is being missed
IF Schmidt had a bad year.
This is just a hypothetical conversation. It mainly stems back to Rueben saying he has not been overly pleased so far with Schmidt. Others here have said they are not pleased with Myers. I was just exposing a loophole.
I do expect Schmidt to be a Canuck next year and as I said no need to protect Myers they will not take him anyways.
Expose Jake is the more realistic scenario.

Canucks are still a few years away from having any RHD that can play his minutes. Benn is a free agent end of this year. Giving up a LHD isn't a big problem for this team. |

Yeah I think so too, he hasn't slowed down a ton and is very loyal to the team. |

Some folks have trouble analyzing defensive play. But yes good point |

I seen it but did not read . I was pretty sure I knew what it was going to say. I don't disagree with your assessment so far of him but I do think he is getting better.
Vegas are also missing him now and are dropping so far but it is early. |

Vegas changed Schmidt for Pietro. They upgraded a 3 for a 1. Of course it doesn't seem like they are missing him. |

Edler has had a shaky start too. The whole team did. They have been getting better every game.

Yes, agree, just pointing out that they don't have a lot of NHL quality defencemen. He won't need to be protected obviously. He won't play anywhere else. |

Now that looks like a great day! That is one of the biggest things I miss being up here in "A of A".
A nice sunny day fly fishing the Skagit River slamming some Bows' and Bulls. - carsonagenic
As many know on here, I'm a fly fishing junkie. Stillwaters here in the Cariboo, Skeena and it's tribs for steelhead with Spey rods... or anything else that you can roll a fly out to.

The current pairings are putting up some pretty good numbers so far. Edler Schmidt were doing good before. OJ wasn't strong enough to help out Myers though. |

Even if Schmidt has a so-so year I could definitely see Myers, Schmidt, Juolevi & Chatfield being protected. With Edler being re-signed on a one year deal. |

#Canucks fans may wonder why Demko isn’t starting vs #GoHabsGo.
It could be a variety of reasons (rest, schedule, etc.) but it could also be that Brayden Holtby’s record in that building is unreal.
In 12 career visits to Montreal, Holtby is 10-1-1 with 1.69 GAA. |

No...
" Current NHL teams can protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goalie, under the following conditions." |
