How are we after the poop show Gillis left us was over?
Benning needs to go simply because he is not the GM to take this team to the next level, but we need someone who isn't going to strip our cupboards and put us back in the position we were in back then(2014) within the next 5 years again.

- Retinalz

Despite Benning's excellent top end draft picks I sincerely wish he'd have actually tried to rebuild instead of trying to be competitive and then tanking at seasons end. If he would've tried to get more draft picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds my assumption is you'd be starting to see some of those picks filter into the lineup as the Sutter's, Beagle's, Roussel's are about to leave.

As to your original question, Benning's done an excellent job of adding top end talent via the draft, so we're in a much better situation obviously than we were six years ago. I think he's hit a plateau though.

This isn't directed at you, even though I'm quoting your post...stand down.

They've been defensively inept for the better part of three years, it isn't about being prepared to start a game properly, it's simply about playing the game properly. Every team is going to have breakdowns, it's inevitable, but playing poor defensively from start to finish is purely unacceptable.

They are second last in goals against thus far, 43 goals allowed, only Ottawa at 44 GA is worse. Last season they were 18th in GA but their offensive guys were scoring and their goaltending was all-star caliber. The year before that they were 20th, it starts with playing better defensively, until they do, their chances are better at the first overall pick than they are at winning a Stanley Cup.

I disagree, that was fully aimed at Vantel.

He's gonna come at you swinging hard for calling him out like this. Harsh dude.

So, what you're saying is the 1st & 2nd for Miller & Toffoli was a bad idea?
- Marwood

JT Miller's been an excellent addition, despite my initial reservations about it, or whining if you will

Toffoli, I was actually for this trade because I felt the team had shown to management that they deserved a shot at the post season, so even in hindsight, I'm still ok with it.

We may not be able to match MTL's overall speed but we can for sure match their effort level. Expecting more tonight.
- LordHumungous

More what?

After the asskicking they handed us at home I thought they'd be proud enough to try to return the favour. I can't believe I made it through the entire game, but watched mostly because I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. NHL guys, in the best league in the world, making mistakes that would make a Peewee coach cringe.

If we had more to players we'd have to pay them and that would mess with the cap. Benning is a stealth genius. But you're right, it's Gilles time!

If you have a run-and-gun style offence with tons of run support, sure, you can outscore your defensive liabilities, Detroit did it with Osgood in net for years.

Personally, despite the Canucks top line firepower potential, imo they're not there in terms of being able to do that if other parts of their game just aren't there.

- Pacificgem

Generally agree that they are not ready for a run-and-gun style, but I'm not sure I agree with the Detroit sentiment entirely. They had a perennial Norris-trophy candidate and several other solid defensive players that allowed them to net Osgood while being successful. Good offensive group (who played good defense), good defensive group (who contributed offensively), average-to-below average goaltending (despite a Jennings win with 43yo Hasek and 35yo Osgood )

Canucks on the other hand have generally had an excellent top 5/6 forward group, awful defense, and above average-to-excellent goaltending. They need a bit more depth up front and overall defensive improvements before these games can consistently come out in their favour IMO

Ya the new Callaway stuff looks promising. You said you liked the Mavrik 3 wood?

I'm in the market for a new 3 wood and might look at the Epic Max among others. The new Titleist 3 woods look unreal too with some adjustability.

Time to retire the 'ol XR 16 I think lol

The new Titleist stuff is really pretty, love it, I just don't hit the woods as far as the Callaway's. The face on the Callaway's seem much hotter?

I have the Mavrik 3-wood, love it, going to upgrade my driver from the old GBB Epic to the Mavrik driver. Skipped the "flash" driver and I'll wait for the reviews on the new "Speed" driver.

Maybe if youโ€™re making a Bolognese sauce and you want to use a whole bottle for cooking, but my general rule is never cook with a wine you wouldnโ€™t drink.

Letโ€™s all agree to drink more Tasmanian Pinot Noir this week!

I was looking at the Islanders roster in 2016/17, they had a bunch of firepower, 10th in GF but 23rd in GA. This was under Jack Capuano as their coach. No playoffs.

Then in 2017/18 Doug Weight takes over and they again have a terrible GA finishing last in the league, even though they finished near the top of the league in GF (8th). Again, no playoffs.

So in 2018/19 Trotz takes over, that year they finish first in GA allowing a league best 196 goals against. So he takes a younger roster with rookie Barzal, young players Beauvillier, Pulock, Nelson, etc. into the second round of the playoffs by simply instilling sound defensive play.

Last year they were top ten again in GA and went into the Conference Finals of the playoffs with a less than All-Star lineup.

We need a better coach!!
