Unlike most of you idiots, I don't cheer on a player based on how much they make.

True but getting petty and Hughes signed to lower contracts could help the cap.

Canucks will have 30M in cap space by the end of expansion draft and buyouts. No cap problems. Just have a rookie defence in 7-9 ELC contracts on the roster.

Apparently, they are getting identical 10 million per contracts. Welcome to another decade of softness and false hopes.

After they take Chatfield or brisebois, the cap situation should be pretty good.

I want to see Briesbois get a serious look. Chatfield has been one of my preferred Dmen so far. We both know he is a good stay at home guy.

👍
Captain woop-woop can come out any time. Totally haven't been impressed with his game, but he is playing with Myers now so I am sure he looks okay.

How are they going to do that when they are protected?

As I have said several times, I wasn't expecting much from this team this season, so I am only disappointed with the teams effort.
It didn't matter who was on the team, whether it was the full team from last year or the current edition, they just weren't a good enough team defensively or in the tough areas.
Last years play-in thingy was fun and exciting to watch, but glaringly obvioua to most, that a poop defensive team could only carry that on for so long.

Nice to see your Norris candidate at the top of the leader board for the masters.
Gosh is he ever a terrible defender.

I think the most annoying part of this is that Green should have realized what didn't work and keeps going back to the same damn place thinking it's going to work again. Benning hasn't helped him out but as you coach you got to work with what you have.

8 incredibly ugly losses this season.

Bad this year, last year he was good. I honestly think the issue for everyone is....they got cocky. The young guys anyways.

After 51 years of cheering on my Canucks, I sure hope they can respond sometime before 2021 comes to a conclusion.
I have high hopes still, for Hughes and Pouty, but this schedule against some heavy teams, may be the undoing of these 2.
I am hoping that I can honestly say that they have proved me wrong, not just in the short term, but in the long term as well.
Go Canucks Go

A bit long, but good summary from the Athletic:

Best ‘NeverEnding Story’

Dhaliwal: Saddest part of this entire story is Toffoli really, really wanted to come back to Vancouver.

Dhaliwal: Tanev to this day feels disrespected

Dhaliwal on Tanev: This guy can not believe how he was treated after 10 years with the Canucks.

Hold on to your horses because we’re about to enter the Swamp of Sadness.

First, imagine that scene in “Community” when Troy goes to get the pizza only to walk back to find the room on fire, except in this case Jim set the fire and there is no pizza because it got delivered to Montreal. That’s the kind of week Benning has had optically for the Canucks.

The fire, in this case, would be the interview he had with Ben Kuzma in which the Canucks general manager discussed losing Toffoli and acknowledged “it was our intention to try and get him signed, and if we could have had a little more time, we could have tried to work through that.”

It’s like if Alderaan saw the budget for space shields and decided to spend the money on a family Spotify account instead; sometimes it’s best to keep that information in-house.

And while you have to give Benning credit for openly conceding he just couldn’t get it done, it was an odd choice to be this upfront about his failure during a week when the heat has probably never been higher in his office.

Free agency doesn’t exactly sneak up on anyone, so “running out of time” is the kind of excuse that will, well, fuel sports talk in a city for 24 hours straight.

At best, it was another bad PR moment from a man who has had his share of them during his time in Vancouver, a throwback to his greatest hits album with Trevor Linden.

At worst, it was an open admission that he failed at his job during free agency during one of the most important offseasons of his tenure.

There is also a third option in which he never intended to sign Toffoli and is simply trying to cover it up by saying he ran out of time, but that would make this a hilariously off-the-mark attempt at damage control.

“I couldn’t have been the person who stole your wallet because at the time I was breaking into your house to steal your car!”

Now, it’s not just that Jim Benning missed out on signing a player — that happens all the time in sports.

It’s that it was a player who was more than open to staying in Vancouver, was well-liked by his teammates and was someone they really had plenty of time to sign if they wanted to.

Would it have required moving contracts out? Most likely.

Was it possible? Very much so.

Did the fact they had to move contracts have to do with cap allocation? Of course.

Equal parts cap management and equal parts openly treating your players like Plan C led Benning to this year’s roster.

Even if you subscribe to the theory that the Canucks’ defensive issues are bigger than their offensive ones (which you wouldn’t be wrong about), they still haven’t even managed to get that under control.

So now they have an offseason in which they lost out on a player who torches them on the regular; have a team that continues to play tremendously poor defense; have a Lotto Line that has a case of the sads; have an in-house band named Jake Virtanen and the Healthy Scratches; and now have stories of former players — such as Chris Tanev, who gave his blood, sweat, tears and teeth to the organization — feeling disrespected with how they were treated.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this under Benning.

When he came in on the heels of Big Bad Mike Gillis, he was the salt-of-the-earth guy. The person who would give you straight answers and return the humanity to a Canucks team that had lost it under the “arrogance” of the old regime.

Yet here we sit, seven years into the job, and the optics of management have never been worse.

And sure, Toffoli isn’t an end-of-the-world scenario. He only plays so many games against Vancouver, so that alone should stop his Rocket Richard race aspirations.

But for a management team that is in dire need of some positive momentum in a season in which it is waging a heavy battle against regression, this interview couldn’t have come at a worse time.

And in a sporting world in which “what have you done for me lately?” can rule the roost, Benning simply can’t afford to be adding any fuel to the fire.

The Van media narratives are getting pretty old. Guys come and go all the time and no one has ever lost sleep over it. Now that some guys are doing good somewhere else, it's the end of the world.

JB hast got to think about the long term and we all know that Canucks media aren't writing about long term, they thinking game by game.

If JB did sign them and they sucked the same way the rest of the team is, you would be hearing how much of a mistake it was to sign them.

Vrbata was such a great signing after 1 year and the 2nd year couldn't get rid of him fast enough.

Van's Yekaterinburg prospect just scored another goal. 2 goals in 5 games so far in the KHL this season. The next Datsyuk is learning from the actual Datsyuk

Make that 3 goals in 5 games now.

The team is technically better except for Markstrom. I was expecting more and am very disappointed in the effort level of defending. Something must be off maybe they have tuned Green out or whatever...

Jeez I mean 6-7 GPG? Sure Marky stole some games for us last year and kept some goals down but he sure ain't ripping it up in CGY either. Tanev is back to his regular self there too.

Demko and Holtby need to step up and focus. I blame the D too but f*uck me make a timely save FFS. As I said yesterday there has to be unresolved sh!t between the D and the goalies neither have confidence in each other...I mean wow how many times do we need to see Edler on his knees playing goal??
