Tampa Bay a decade ago also got a 1st and 2nd overall. Plus a 3rd overall a few years later. - manvanfan
For sure, that’s undeniable but look at their depth. Their depth is so good that they can win a cup without Stamkos. They trade away a decent player or 2 every year due to cap and still keep winning. A few of the guys they trade away become key players on their new teamed when they were just role players in Tampa. If having lottery picks was enough to become a great organization then the Oilers wouldn’t still be mediocre. |

I'd make a case for 5 or 6 reasons to fire him before that, but I'd agree with that assessment for sure. I think he's had a big enough opportunity to turn this franchise completely around now. - Codes1087
If they lose Monday, JB's going to get some heat.

That's because Elmer is an old school scout who's applying the same philosophy to his GM position. That's what VAN signed up for. - VanHockeyGuy
I agree. I just wish they went with a more diverse front office. I think going too heavy on old school or analytics is a recipe for disaster. You don’t want a bunch of guys who think the same way and saying “Yes” to every move the GM suggests. |

Edler is his best option vs Matthew's
Schmidt vs Tavares
And he has benn playing with Hughes
While I agree with you in some capacity, he also doesn't have the best roster to optimize either lol - Codes1087
It is not a great hand he's been dealt, but any time you put LE back in the line up you're going all in with an off-suit 2/7 |

I mean it can’t get much hotter, I’ve seen plenty of people who have said that they were neutral or happy with Benning who have admitted they were wrong. Even the national media is starting to question him and they’ve been pretty pro-Benning in the past |

When you start from nothing and make a few mistakes, it's never going to look good quickly. I still think that people's ideas of how long a rebuild takes are way too short.
Canucks aren't exactly getting any luck in the draft lotto. Benning is still getting lots of good player. Just not good enough and not enough of them and not in time.
It was a decade ago TB got 1st and 2nd overall.
Chicago was 4 years without playoffs, round 1 loss, then another 5 years where they got a 1st and 3rd.
Penguins 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd
Van's a 6th, 5th, 5th, 7th. In most drafts 1-2-3 are generally better than 5ths.

J.T. Miller was in their bottom 6 the year before they traded him.
Carter Verhaeghe was in and out of their lineup last year, he’s over a PPG on Florida’s top line right now.
Jonathan Marchessault was in and out of their lineup, he became Florida’s leading goal scorer the year after he was let go, now he’s a top line player for Vegas |

What is his leash then in your opinion? What would he have to do/not do for you to come around to the idea of him being gone would be beneficial to the club? And how long do you give him, given your explanation above?

Even if you get 1sts, you’re not winning unless you have good cap/asset management
I’m so thankful that the Oilers don’t otherwise they’d be dominating the Canucks

Just getting lottery picks doesn't make you good at drafting. JB has probably won 3 out of 5 drafts.
Boeser is worth a good 15 spots better than he was picked. Petey best player taken at 5th. Hughes is probably the 3rd best player from his draft and he can't even play defence. Taken 7th.
Getting a defencemen in the top 5 in this draft, you are still looking 2-3 years before they probably impact the team. |

The GM should be fired he created this mess. The players are quitting on the GM not coach
dbot in shambles
even former NHL'ers can tell when a team isn't trying - Nucker101
Sopes speaks the truth.
JB's time has come.
I don't see the logic in firing the coach now, hiring a new GM in the offseason who will want to bring in his own guy.
Fire the GM now, ride the year out and make a decision on Green in the offseason.

An entire team of players feelings knowing that if they quit playing that the GM will be gone... How many GM's are going to get rolled by this team and their "feelings"? |

That’s a bit misleading given the fact we got the #1 pick in Pettersson in 2017 (at 5th overall) and probably the #2 pick in Quinn Hughes in 2018 (at 7th overall). So not getting lottery luck but certainly getting lucky with who they picked. |

You could also argue that Rangers, Leafs and Blue Jackets have had picks that have gone on to be key members of other teams.
I thought you were referring to guys who had played several seasons as depth guys on the team.
I was expecting you to mention DeAngelo. |

You could JB a good "F" on drafts 2014 and 2016 but I haven't seen a GM be able to win every draft. |
