If Benning has screwed up free agency then he is the best GM ever. How many times has Burkie said the biggest mistakes are made on July 1. - VANTEL
So after 7 years you are saying Benning has not screwed up the team? Good young talent cap strapped bottom 5 team locker room issues potentially go ahead let's see what you got from there |

What we currently need is a guy to take over now like Gillis did when there was a core in place. Except the incoming guy has to be better on the draft floor. Mike Gillis was excellent at adding depth to the core, he was excellent at being innovative for the franchise. Would've been interesting to see what he would've done had Aquilini let him rebuild the franchise.
Like many people I'm sure he'll learn from his past experiences and be a better GM moving forward after having five years to reflect on his downfalls. That applies to Jim Benning as well, he won't be here forever and when he's rehired I'm sure he'll be a better GM the second time around after some reflection time. - Pacificgem

9 mtcs going for a cup vs
Loui 6 mill NtC
Beagle 3mill ntc
Roused what 4 mill? Nice
Myers 6 mill ntc
Sutts 4.5 mill ntc
Sven 3.5 mill? Ntc
Yeah they aren't ntcs for.most but nobody wants them oops. Half of them would be OK. Wouldn't have cost us a decent top six on a good contract in toffoli thats for sure - Jkuzzi
To be fair there is probably one player on that list that a team would take on waivers, so the NTC is meaningless. |

You do know there is a difference between a full NTC and M-NTC right ? One of them they give a list and the other you can't trade without their permission. |

Our Core will still be young when those bad contracts expire and we can attract better UFA's for cheaper. Benning will have also stocked the cupboards to have youngs guys continuing to push for NHL jobs.
What we need is a GM that can continue on with what Benning has put in to place for Amateur Scouting and improve Pro Scouting/Contract Negotiations. |

I'm going to be interested to see what kind of team Ron Francis puts together on expansion draft day. |

Vantel what I'm saying is they all have "NTC and NMCs" cause they aren't movable nobody will want them for free big guy. |

Agree! Draft is on 21st June. Should be interesting, along with all (any?) pre-draft trading that happens. Same rules as for Vegas.
All the GMs will be better prepared, but they are also coping with flat cap and all the restrictions from the pandemic affecting the development leagues. |

Let me get this straight. Assuming Canucks were cap strapped which they are not, you want more cap space so you can go out and get more UFAs even though the Canucks have drafted players that are now ready to play.
You want more cap to make more bad choices because the ones in the past were not enough???

OK . Half will be gone this year and the other half the next year.
You still don't need more cap to go out and sign UFAs long term here.

One way to solve that issue is stop hiring first time General Managers. Harry Neale was a first time GM, Jack Gordon was a first time GM, Quinn was a first time GM (I think), Burke was a first time GM, Nonis was a first time GM, Gillis was a first time GM and Benning was a first time GM.
You see a pattern there? You'd have to go back to probably the best GM in Canucks history, Jake Milford, to find a guy who wasn't a first time GM. |

Yeah, if they can get rid of Myers, then it's pretty much a clean slate for the new GM with all these young players. |

Canucks aren't cap strapped? Why didn't we sign Tyler toffoli at 4 mill per for 4 years as a 28 year old. Didnt the gm say he ran out of time cause he couldn't move money? Dude it's ok I know I get a bit hot on here sometimes but open your eyes. I wish the best for the team and good luck to them but those poopty contracts are hurting the locker room with decent players.leaving you can tell when JT miller called it a reset cause of lost.players in the off-season. I hope we have a new leader.gm wise for our next step. |

Minor point — Burke had been a GM for Hartford for a year prior to the Canucks

No big deal let's lose a top 6 winger for Holtby and Virtanen then all the new cap room goes to EP and Hughes. Hasn't hurt us at all. We're a very solid team with great management I agree.... |

You guys got to look at numbers.
Markstrom 6 mil
Tanev 4.5 mil
Toffoli 4.3 mil
Holtby 4.3mil
Schmidt 6 mil
Jake 2.5 mil
Ferland 3.5 mil
At any point they could have brought back one , two or three of them . They let them walk because they did not want them long term.

Over is the blue corner we have dog poop and over in the red corner we have cow poop, let's call the one in the blue corner, Jim Benning and the one in the red corner, Mike Gillis.
Both come from a different animal and are a product of different food(situations), but in the end, they are still just poop. |

They could be adding is the point. And on that topic not wanting toffoli over holtby is ridiculous bad assessment of cap
Not signing Marly and Tanev was smart imo. Letting toffoli got for Jake and or hiltby is (frank)in ridiculous.
Without loui we could maybe signed Hall for 1 year apparently as well. What was he 1 year 8 mill? Tt and hall added to the team hmmmmm yeah the cap didn't hurt us at all. Not saying he'd sign but he may be tempted then he can leave the year after |
