Gillis doesn't get credit for Hamhuis. The guy literally said that he will only sign with Vancouver because it was his dream. Other teams paid for early negotiation rights and he told them no. Miller >> Ehrhoff any day for trades. Benning is not a good GM, but his best trade trumps Gillis, and his worst trade is still not as bad as Gillis (Gudbranson vs Ballard) as Gudbranson at least turned in to Pearson who could net us something at the TDL. Gillis was good at cap management and that was it. Our core, that was set up by Burke and Nonis, attracted UFA's left, right and centre. Gillis merely signed them to good cap hits, that is his legacy. Good cap hits with NTC's attached. - Retinalz
Not wanting to lose your Benning bro membership card yet, huh?
Schneider for Horvat would be Gillis's best trade.
Still cleared space and signed Hamhuis, it was a mutual attraction, Benning wouldn't have made space abd talked about the need for a "certain style" of D which signaled his interest in Hamhuis.
Resigning the twins, Luongo.
Bieksa and Burrows where also moves made under his purview.
2 presidents cups, no bottom 10 finishes. 1 SCF.
Bloated reward contracts sewering the cap and no draft picks
Vs
Multiple bottom 10 finishes, 2 playoff appearances, more picks traded vs brought in(so many 2nds out by both) bloated old guy contracts sewering the cap.
Sorry, Benning vs Gillis isn't a contest, Gillis wins hands down. |

Reverse the starting position for each GM and you more than likely reverse who won.
Gillis' biggest problems were that he couldn't draft and he over anyalized everything (paralysis analysis)...give him the team Benning had and he jumps off a building.
Benning needs better people around him. Weisbrod is brutal and TL was too soft...kept trying to copy other teams rebuild models rather than charting his own course as President. Team needs a new strong President at a minimum to foster Benning's good qualities and snuff out the bad ones.

The only one I liked was Donnie because he was a crusty old fart, knew jack-poop about sports but be was entertaining at least with his whit. - Pacificgem
He knew his sports trivia and jersey numbers for sure. I liked him since the Sports Page days. I drive around a lot for work, so radio is the most convenient format to listen to. Can't stand SN650, painful to listen to. At least TSN1040 was reasonably entertaining sometimes. Liked some personalities, didn't care for others, but it did have 4 or 5 times the listeners that 650 has/had. Listened to both and it was pretty obvious why. |

You guys got to look at numbers.
Markstrom 6 mil
Tanev 4.5 mil
Toffoli 4.3 mil
Holtby 4.3mil
Schmidt 6 mil
Jake 2.5 mil
Ferland 3.5 mil
At any point they could have brought back one , two or three of them . They let them walk because they did not want them long term. - VANTEL
Ferland was signed the season previous and just further illustrates Benning's poor cap management. |

No even close, Gillis was a cancer to this organization, the radiation treatments are still being felt.
I guess there are some fans that think Gillis was competent and still long for his ineptitude, but I'll take Benning over Gillis every time.
Gillis, my god, I'm somewhat surprised you haven't advocated for McGuire or Millbury, all cut from the same cloth of uselessness.
Although it is time this franchise moved on from both Benning and Green. |

Some good points but I think we'll see.
By now the Seattle Kraken should have a good idea of players they are targeting. This 2020-2021 season should convince them to finalize their choices as certain players see their Expansion Draft stock either rise or fall.
In all the wackiness that is a shortened season, Kraken scouts will be left asking themselves questions such as, “is this player having a down year, or is it just the shortened season?”
It will be much harder to gauge the trajectory of a prospect to build a future team.
The Vegas Golden Knights set the gold standard for putting together an Expansion team, and the Expansion Draft format will have the same rules for the Seattle Kraken...however Francis will be a little more limited on his 'back door' deals unlike McPhee.
The weird layoffs in between seasons is something Vegas, and no NHL team before it, has ever had to experience. That will make it harder for Seattle to find their diamond in the rough type of players for their first season...maybe - LordHumungous
I agree that Seattle will be hard pressed to find a diamond in the rough like William Karlsson, but I still think they come out of the draft with a decent roster and probably a decent amount of draft picks. |

I can't envision any scenario where Benning is the head man of a hockey team that comes within 1 game of winning the Stanley Cup. He probably would've surrounded that core with crusty overrated vets, he absolutely sucks at evaluating NHL dmen and overvalues the poop out of 4th liners.
Sucks at hiring coaches too.
He's a great accidental tank GM |

Ottawa played really well. Hogberg let them down on a couple until he got pulled. His angles were way off. |

Millbury
I'm being a little sarcastic about bringing Gillis back, but.....
I wouldn't mind Gillis as president and leave Benning as GM.
Let Benning handle the draft and Gillis the contract negotiations. Hell, bring in TL as VP to handle the press...
Benning couldn't hold Gillis jock strap. They both have pros and cons but one hit to a game 7, the other has drafted top 10 5 out of 7 drafts. |

Given the brutal start it has come down to can the Canucks pass the Alberta teams (i.e. likely won't be able to catch TO/Mtl/Win). The remaing games against Calgary and Edmonton are do or die essentially. Canucks schedule does get easier and Alberta schedules get tougher moving forward - B2Bs remaining for each team:
Canucks = 3 left
Calgary = 8 left
Edmonton = 9 left
