100k dollars isn’t that much, you’re still paying a long term mortgage in Vancouver making that kind of money. Unless you’re old like Donnie. Probably bought his house for 200k in the 80’s. - Pacificgem
I agree it's not much in Vancouver, but I was told that the big names make a comfortable living plus they're on contracts so they should be getting a nice final payout from Bell. |

Both were terrible trades by Gillis. - Pacificgem
I saw the logic in the Ballard trade. He was durable, could skate, was physical, could put up some points and played against top lines in the past. Especially since it seemed like the Canucks always had a top 4 dman out injured back then.
Booth was a risky trade since he wasn't playing well in Florida during the time he was dealt, and the fit next to Kesler was awkward. Gillis tried to buy low and instead he got sold damaged goods. |

I am definitely not sure but I think most of them are on one year contracts. If their contracts end in March the payout would not be big .

Point being, letting Öhlund walk and trading for Ehrhoff turned out to be huge in their success for a few seasons. Letting Willie Mitchell walk was stupid. - Pacificgem

I have no clue either, that would suck if it was one year deals with March renewals |

Mitchell + Hamhuis would've been sick, plus you keep the pick and Grabner from the Ballard deal. Hindsight is 20/20 though. People thought Willie was (frank)ed after the concussion with his play style but he came back from it like a champ. |

There were lineups posted in here with both of them "completing our top 6"
To be fair, back then most people though that they'd be solid for the first 3 or 4 years of their deals and then suck during the last 2 or 3. - Nucker101
Yup, we didn't think it would be all garbage, so the time |

Ballard was solid before the trade, it's crazy how he just fell off. I remember the Yotes used him as a shutdown dman against the Sedins lol.
Booth was just Virtanen - Nucker101

If Benning is back for one more season, I think a good chunk of fans will tune out unless this season turns around. I've said it before, but this is the first time I've seen casuals turn on Benning, and once the casuals turn on management, the viewership and merchandise sales usually start to decline big time. - Nucker101
Ya good possibility, the team has not played well.
I still think there are some legit reasons for not panicking yet - new group, loss of key leaders (team is clearly in the storming phase of their relationship), schedule to start the season was crazy (16 game days and only 11 non-game days), and the schedule favours the Canucks moving forward (only three back to backs left while most other teams have 7 or more remaining).
I just hope they get some rest, put on their happy faces and play some solid hockey. Let the rest fall where it may.

Tis upcoming week will be telling, they finally get some days in between games and they're at home. If they still suck then the season is toast most likely. They have to be a top 6 or top 7 team in the league the rest of the way to make the playoffs right now. |

Tough day at 1040. Loved working with so many special people: Moj,Ryan,Bmac,Pratt, everyone. A million laughs each day and a career-saver after I got too old,fat and bald to stay on TV. Thanks to our great listeners and thanks to the late, great Paul Carson who got 1040 started.

He was instrumental in the Canucks building the #1 PP in the league, so, despite your feelings, he played a major role in the success of the club in 2011. I’m sure you were cheering for them to lose though as you hate everybody from that unbelievable team - Pacificgem

Hey, Makita, it’s hard for me to agree with you on this, so I’m curious...
Advanced stats don’t appear to support this view (at least the ones I’ve seen recently) and while Hughes has been a horrible defender this year, Myers is right behind him on high danger chances, expected goals against, and turnovers. Surprisingly, Schmidt is doing the best in those stats.
what are you seeing in Myers that gives you certainty that he is the best of this lot?
(Honest question) - SlightlyOffside
First off I have to admit I'm not an advanced stats guy, I am more inclined to Yzermans thinking that advanced stats help to form a decision not drive the decision, stats are just too subjective (much like my opinion).
I have watched Myers backcheck, win the board battles, gain possession and look to pass to the forward, only the forward is not looking for the pass, has already exited the zone, is afraid to get hit, and turns the puck over where as Myers now has to try and win the board battles all over again. But Myers is singled out as the problem, not the lackluster effort of the forward.
Myers reach has defused more plays in the defensive zone, but again I feel the softness of the teammates just puts Myers in the hot seat again.
Myers has a terrific shot from the blueline, can hit, and hit hard, saw Edler do that 1 game out of 15.
The other thing is this place is a pile on, gang up place, a player makes an error and one persons criticism turns into majority piling on.
Last game zero-zero Schmidt has all the time to make a play but kicks the puck to Rielly, one nothing, Myers plays the puck to Hughes, Hughes no look pass to Matthews 2-1. But Myers is the scapegoat and Hughes is revered because he puts up points, but in my opinion costs more points against than any other dman.
So my main issue is people here are not objective, if Myers makes a bonehead play he should be criticized, if his teammates make bonehead plays they should be criticized, not all on Myers.
I'm starting to like Torts more and more, make a mistake, have a seat, regardless if it is Hughes, Pettersson, Miller, Schmidt, whomever. |

I agree with you about Myers, not about Schmidt though. I think he's better then he shown and him and Myers are both decent D. |

Why does it matter who makes what? The point was that the same group of people are outraged that one set of sports people were all fired and demanding that another set all get fired.
