Drafting has to be continuous .

Ballard bought out . Booth was a gong show. Roy did squat.

Vancouver fans forget how bad this guy was for this market. We are still dealing with his sh1t he left behind with the recapture.

He could come back and take the C from Bo and give it to Demko I guess but I like the less crazy type of GMs

You're wrong their mandate was go for it. They almost succeeded. Benning mandate was go for it they failed horribly. Way worse contracts less talent less everything. Dealing with luongo is peanuts and a fluke vs all the garbage deals JB has handed out. Myers is the new Loui. Get rid of Benning just horrible

lol no worries I'm not in the bring Gillis back group I know the damage he caused as much as he helped the club too. Just fun to talk about.

Personally I think the ingredients are there for the club to figure this out. Wrenches will be tossed in from time to time have to power through lol

Sure Green may not have the experience to take this current roster over the top but chances are there will be no coaching change this season. So the players need to step up. Trust the systems that have worked and build from there. There is enough talent on this club win games and compete in this division. Just have to figure it out. Tanev, Marky, Stecher Leivo and TT are gone. Not the end of the world.

Drafting has been done for him the past 5 years all good. Gillis could just round out the group with more Hamhuis, Higgins, Malholtra, Lappy, Torres, Ehrhoff, Samuelsson, Ballard, Rome...etc etc type players lol

You don't believe in second chances??

- LordHumungous

Gillis doesn't get credit for Hamhuis. The guy literally said that he will only sign with Vancouver because it was his dream. Other teams paid for early negotiation rights and he told them no. Miller >> Ehrhoff any day for trades. Benning is not a good GM, but his best trade trumps Gillis, and his worst trade is still not as bad as Gillis (Gudbranson vs Ballard) as Gudbranson at least turned in to Pearson who could net us something at the TDL. Gillis was good at cap management and that was it. Our core, that was set up by Burke and Nonis, attracted UFA's left, right and centre. Gillis merely signed them to good cap hits, that is his legacy. Good cap hits with NTC's attached.

Hearing Jay Feaster for GM and he will pursue the soon to be dismissed Torts.

Torts wants a mulligan in Vancouver.

Makes sense.

The GM we need won't work with FA. That's the problem. I don't know exactly who that is, but doesn't change the fact that FA's options will always be limited because people don't want to work for him.

Agree with most.

Gillman did the cap and he is quite happy in TOR who do have cap issues (Not saying he created them).

Gillis era when he left had 9 full NTC and NMC combined so basically half the roster were registered to the Country Club so when contracts did need to be moved players had pretty much full control.

Mike Gillis has said many times he wouldn't come back as a General Manager, he wants to be President of Hockey Operations.....he just lost out to the dinosaur Brian Burke because his kid was stupid enough to leak his entire plan onto social media. The kid probably just (frank)ed any future chance Gillis had at becoming an NHL executive with that kind of stupidity

Lots of mistakes by both but clearly a Gillis bias comment. He took the job with a great YOUNG core in place. Benning had to draft a core after the Gillis tire fire. Benning has made mistakes but building a core takes a lot longer and is much harder than simply adding complimentary pieces.

At this point, Benning’s biggest failure is overpaying for NHL experience. If he had been more balanced on that aspect and his NHL scouting was better, things would likely be much better. He now has to dig himself out of it but he may not get the chance to do so.

NHL and NHLPA are discussing enhanced protocols. Some interesting inclusions that are deemed to be a work in progress at the moment. Will outline those in Insider Trading shortly.

Their two situations were completely different, apples and oranges, as you mention. Each had challenges in their own right. Both were/are good at certain parts of the job and terrible at others.

Interesting. Give me Gillis all day. I think JB has screwed up free agency a ton and done well at the draft table but lost his head scout and now has cost the team the next 3 ish year because we have zero cap space. Forget ntcs we have zero room to improve because of Benning mistakes after 7 years. Just a difference of opinion but I think we can agree they both screwed up badly in different aspects

If Benning has screwed up free agency then he is the best GM ever. How many times has Burkie said the biggest mistakes are made on July 1.

9 mtcs going for a cup vs

Loui 6 mill NtC
Beagle 3mill ntc
Roused what 4 mill? Nice
Myers 6 mill ntc
Sutts 4.5 mill ntc
Sven 3.5 mill? Ntc

Yeah they aren't ntcs for.most but nobody wants them oops. Half of them would be OK. Wouldn't have cost us a decent top six on a good contract in toffoli thats for sure

What we currently need is a guy to take over now like Gillis did when there was a core in place. Except the incoming guy has to be better on the draft floor. Mike Gillis was excellent at adding depth to the core, he was excellent at being innovative for the franchise. Would've been interesting to see what he would've done had Aquilini let him rebuild the franchise.

Like many people I'm sure he'll learn from his past experiences and be a better GM/President moving forward after having five years to reflect on his downfalls. That applies to Jim Benning as well, he won't be here forever and when he's rehired I'm sure he'll be a better GM the second time around after some reflection time.
