So, which player are we getting from Florida, Huberdeau or Ekblad, or both? - Reubenkincade
Both, the new package
Gaudette, Rafferty JV, Myers, Pearson and a second |

I'm guessing both but not at the same time.
Should be able to unload a bad contract in one of the shrewd trades.

The Vegas draft probably had 15 picks thrown in by GMs getting rid of their mistakes.
It happens so often in hockey by just about every GM. I really don't know how much value a second round pick will have this year? If we use that strategy fine if we don't fine again. - VANTEL
i have always been, and probably always will be, a draft and develop guy. Utilizing ELCs has never been more important, and if Covid and Flat caps are here to stay, than they are even more important than before. Also have to note that players are better at a younger age these days. Look at Seth Jarvis and Trevor Zegras in the AHL right now, its remarkable.
I won't deny that many GM's make mistakes in free agency, or in contract negotiations, thats 100% true. Having said that, Benning has made a TON of bad judgement calls in these, and we are frankly paying for them right now. If its between giving up on a potential hoglander-type player and dealing a 2nd to get rid of a bad contract, I would rather keep the pick and make management eat their mistakes, much like what Benning has had to do with LE.

Yes, unfortunately we seem to have wasted both EP and QH entry level contracts due to bad cap management, perhaps wasted boeser's and Horvats bridge deals as well. |

Imo, Horvat has been better but yes, Boeser has been great for us. 7.5m to retain him after next season though... anyways I guess it's crying over spilt milk. - Pres.cup
I don't think it is 7.5m, I could be wrong but there is something that has allowed teams to qualify for lower after a bridge. Something to do with 3 year deals? Something for someone else to look in to. |

I like Boeser, I wouldn't trade him for Ekblad, but thats just me. At this point, I think the Canucks are in a holding pattern until these sh*tty contracts expire. LE/Baertschi/Sutter/Beagle/Edler/Roussel all need to go. When that money is freed, make the team better, but until then, management needs to eat their mistakes, and not try and fix them at the expense of draft picks or prospects IMO - Codes1087

Benning basically insulted Toffoli in the exit interviews. He had 8 months to get a deal done. Maybe it just wasn't in the cards. - VANTEL
There is definitely a fine line between country club and team cohesiveness. I think that might be one of the hardest balancing acts for a GM.
I think Tanev may have been a ‘team guy’, favourite in the locker room, the ‘glue’ that bonds everyone together. I wonder what their value is if their presence positively affects the production of your best players? |

Canucks have bought out one player Spooner in seven years. They have not used draft picks to move contracts like the Leafs. This year Tor will have 10 mil to sign 10 players, Habs will have 14.7 to sign 8 players and Canucks have 26 mil to sign 11 players. - VANTEL
Canucks will be right up against the cap after QH and EP’s raises plus Demko will get a boost too. And they have to replace or re-sign Edler. Need a 3C pretty badly as well.
Benning or the new GM will have his work cut out for him.
That Myers contract looks brutal right now, once Loui’s gone, the attention will turn onto him. He’s gonna be the guy who misses Loui and Sutter the most once the fans turn on him. |

if it wasn't in the cards, i hate to say it, but it was because it was on Benning.
The excuse that he didn't have enough time is insulting, because he had the time, he just didn't have the cap space and he didn't know if he could utilize a buyout.
LE, Sutter, Baertschi, Roussel, Beagle will account for $19.735 million towards the cap next year. Obviously Luongo's cap recapture adds to this, but overall, this is absolutely terrible. |

Sutter and Baer are done this season. Rous, beag and LE will account for 12 m. |

I miss-spoke, meant this year.
We can probably add Jake, his 2.5 AAV (1 goal, 1 point in 12 games) to the list as well. |

There definitely some hilarious irony to Benning overpaying for role player “character guys” and then not being able to afford to retain one of the most liked players in the locker room who was actually a core player to boot.
Again, I don’t think the Tanev and Marky deals were great contracts considering term and age but I’d much rather take the gamble on them being able to age well instead of hoping that these old stale bottom 6 players age well.
I think a good chunk of Benning critics were against signing any of those Markstrom, Tanev, Sutter, Myers, Beagle contracts. |

Was Tanev the leader in the locker room or was he a friend whose house they could hang out and snort coke? Big difference.
I have never heard of Tanev being the voice in the locker room but I have seen pictures of Petey sleeping on his couch.
There have been stories floated around on here about the coke use and the speculation of Petey and Tanev using it.

i was being dramatic. I quite like the core we have, and I like who we have coming up in the next little while. Comparing today vs 7 or 8 years ago is apple and oranges IMO. |
