Florida plays TB today & all eyes will be on Jonathan Huberdeau's ice time, especially 5on5. He's 5th among FLA forwards in EV TOI/GP but 1st in PP. His TOI went up after a 5pt night in just 14:55 TOI on Feb 4, only to drop to 12:27 last game, where he had 2A. 3 of his 4G are EV.

We never won anything in the past with Markstrom or Tanev. I don't think signing a 30 year old goalie that has issues with his groin and throwing away Demko was the answer. - VANTEL
All true and even though I was ok with Marky at 4 X 5.5 I'm glad we don't have him at 6X6. Like the Sedins eventually you just need to move on and once Edler is gone we can really get the D in order. |

He took the better offer . Thank you for your services don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Every year players leave teams . That is why it is important to have good young players ready to step in.
This team when it is playing well controls the game like our last game. Then they make two mistakes and game over. Those mistakes will eventually be less and less.

I heard rumblings at the beginning of the year. I think he will be moved but maybe to Avs . I doubt we get involved. |

Your narrative is so wrong. It’s not $500k, it’s $13million. They didn’t “save his career” any more than they saved Myers or Sutter’s career. They gave him an opportunity and he rewarded their patience. So once again, I ask, why would any player leave money on the table when the organization seems able to throw it around to guys who had done nothing to warrant it? Why would the team MVP take less than the guy sitting in the press box? - 1970vintage
Again because they saved his career lol. Pretty basic. They didn't need to 'invest' 5 years in Myers or Sutter or whoever to bring their careers back from the brink of nothingness like Markys was. Sure you are right term was a part of it but really he could have gave the club that saved his ass a break at 500K for a 4 year contract. My take anyways. Pretty big FU to the club that brought him back from the brink. I know you love to use Beagle, Sutter, Myers, Rousell etc etc etc to pitch your narratives too so it is what it is. If Markstrom is worried about what LE makes in the press box he has deeper issues IMO. |

Wow, he gets more points then I thought - 92 a couple years ago.
I don't think we have the assets or cap to get him.
It would have to be JV + Schmidt (5.9 cap same as him) + 1st might do it

He was asked a few weeks before the season started if he would buy out Sutter he said we need him incase of injuries .
I get that it is painful to watch but this was not the year to make moves .Toffoli does have 9 goals but only two against a team not named Canucks who played brutal. Next year he will probably end up with 17 goals and the year after 15 . - VANTEL
But yet they did make moves, they brought in an overpaid 29 year old defenseman for 5 years at 5.595 million, and paid a 3rd round pick. |

Fla are sort of funny. They let Dadinov and Hoffman walk for free and I heard in the offseason they were open to moving Huberdeau.
They are playing well now but I think they thought when they signed Quinville and Bobrovsky they were also hoping to get Pananrin and go all in. I don't know if it was Covid or second thoughts but they look like they are trying to dump salary now.

Despite Sutters Hat-Trick, and Toffoli having 90% of his goals vs us, I would still have made the move to keep Toffoli and buyout Sutter. This team has and continues to have too much bottom end talent. I also would have been happy paying Toffoli the exact same contract as the Habs, and then exposing him to E-draft. As much as I hate to admit it, but Bergervin did some tidy business in the off season in his acquisitions (josh anderson contract length and money aside)

If the team can afford to pay Lui $6m to sit in the press box, or Myers $6m to cough up the puck and take bad penalties surely they can afford to pay their team MVP the same. A player shouldn’t have to sacrifice their security because management mismanaged their cap space. But now the fans are getting what they deserve, 5oltby for two years. |

They did trade yes. Nate Schmidt in the playoffs looked like a clear upgrade over Tanev and still may be . Hard to gauge after 16 games.

Bergevin was very active . If they win the cup then he proves everyone wrong. If they don't make it out of the division he can collect his steak knives and participation badge like the ones Benning got last year.
They will lose players next year. Danault has already turned down 30 mil 6 year offer from them and said he wants to be paid like a top line center. If he changes his mind and signs then they will lose Tatar. Every team faces this.
I didn't want Toffoli for four years . Sorry . Pearson is next to walk.

I like Pearson. I dont think he deserves a raise, but him and Horvat are sooo good defensively together on that line. Ultimately, hes a guy that I can see them letting go as well, he just won't be worth the money and the team won't have that money to give

I guess we'll find out tonight what kind of character we have.
We're rested, playing a team we're chasing.
There are absolutely no excuses for a poor effort. |

one COULD use the argument, that maybe he was waiting to see if he could use a buyout on sutter, free up some money, then sign him, but regardless, there were no talks till after the bubble playoffs (confirmed by all parties).
I am happy Stecher/Marky/Tanev walked.
In my opinion, I would have loved to see them buyout Sutter, let Virtanen go, Signed Toffoli, and sign Leivo. - Codes1087

I am sure if he said one year at 2 mil he would stay but I do think he will be traded for a pick anytime before TDL.
Why would a team lock into term right now if you don't intend to make them a core player? Teams picked up some real bargains last year like Hoffman 1 year Spezza Simmonds Thorton Bogasian Perry all one year contracts for 1 mil.
Bergevin did a nice upgrade from last year and they are playing to no fans in the bldg and a shortened year so if they don't make it out the division how much of a victory is that?

From what I heard Marky was offered 4X5.5 and Tanev 4X4 which were very fair contracts. JB is on record saying he ran out time to sign Toffoli...had nothing to do with Marky Tanev Leivo or Stecher from what I could tell. Most teams need to move money around and have bad contracts is what it is. - LordHumungous
I think you're right about the contract offers.
I know the quote from Benning touched on him running out of time to move money out to sign Toffoli.
I agree about all teams having bad contracts, however I don't think any team has the following level of poor contracts, he obviously gets a pass for Luongo.
AHL caliber(should be league minimum)
Eriksson 6m
Sven 3.5m
Spooner 3m
Replacement level(13th forward, should be <1m)
Roussel 3m
Depth forwards (should be 1.5m or less)
Beagle 3m
Virtanen 2.5m
Bottom 6 forward (should be under 3m)
Sutter 4.25m
All in all I'm not unhappy with the cost of the D Corp but look at those players listed above and deduct what they should be making(not to mention the term and ntc that 4 of them have).
25.25m spent on players that should cost 9.25m max.
That's 16 million in dead cap, could have signed all 3 of our good UFA'S, still made the trade for Schmidt and signed Holtby (would be dumb to buy the cap would have allowed it).
It's both silly and non factual to say that Benning's cap management has been poor. |

Very weird team. On the cusp for so long without ever making it deep into playoffs or dropping to the basement. Can't understand why they're benching Huberdeau. |

I think when Benning said he ran out of time he probably meant at looking at other options to see if there was a better deal when we circled back we ran out of time.
As Codes pointed out they did have 8 months to get a deal done.
