But why?
When racial issues are discussed, SchennBros always mentions he is black. It is to say that he has a personal insight into the situation, and the same principle applies.
In the early weeks of the Covid-19 crisis, There was widespread discrimination against people of Asian descent. Many were beaten up.
There was a clear ethnic/racial issue associated with the virus at that stage. I don't see why saying he has a personal stake in the situation makes him asinine. - PT21
I'm Canadian and I have a 7 year old son (also a Flyers fan). My girlfriend's is Asian-Canadian, her parents immigrated to Canada from Laos. As a dad, I would not tolerate in any shape or form if ever my son was ever subject to racial slurs or bullying based on racism, xenophobia that's been aimed at the Asian community during the COVID-19 crisis.
- Chris48
Read the quote again, not my interpretation, but their words. THEIR WORDS.
So if he wasn't dating an Asian-Canadian then he would tolerate racism more against the Asian community, but because he is then it's a strictly no tolerate situation?
My mind doesn't comprehend that kind of logic. You don't tolerate racism because it's not right no matter what, not because your situation dictates it. Just like cancer is not ok unless you have a family member with it. |

I disagree. An outdoor game is affected by the weather. Should we not mention a foot of snow on the ice?
Also, it's a false equivalency to say you have a right to your opinion.
IMO, you don't. (Contrary is me.) Opinions can be formed around flimsy, non-substantial structures like feelings, beliefs and cultural baggage. If you can't express your opinion in reliable (as possible) factual underpinnings, eat it. That's YOUR dinner. It's not shareable to someone like my agnostic self, regardless of the condiments.
Where's the beef?
Incidentally, this makes statistics a driving force to me. It does lead you to uncomfortable 'truths', that can be completely Non-PC, left or right, and rarely to harmony with the 'believers'. This takes balls (PC? Not me!) and what the SJWs would call a complete lack of Emotional Intelligence (A quality only good for self-serving politicians and influencers like religious and SJW leaders.). If you want to make genuine progress you must be unflinching but compassionate (if you want to live), while you subtlety beat those smucks into submission.
They will resist but even the Popes had to admit to stupid concerning Galileo. - Pompous
Speaking of Galileo, I just read Galileo's Dream by Kim Stanley Robinson. It is a difficult read but KSR is a great sci fi/eco author. I suggest a read of his trilogy about DC/politics/and climate change disaster called the Green Earth. It is like a script for everything going on without the pandemic. It is actually frightening its so spot on.... |

My dear geniuses
Here is the problem with the analogies you provide (Ebola, West Nile etc. etc.) and Covid-19.
In all of those cases: the virus did not already have a well-established name by the time a 2nd name was attempted. Those names (Ebola, West Nile Etc) were the first names of common usage.
By the time Trump started calling it China/Wuhan flu, the virus had not just been officially named as something else many weeks earlier, that name (Covid/Coronovirus) had already become part of widespread common usage and been used hundreds of millions of times.
In other words, it's not the issue of naming the virus anything you like. If the name had originally been China virus, your arguments would have some validity.
It's the issue of RENAMING an already names virus anything you like. Instead, It is like me saying: I am going to refer to Hockeybuzz as BuzzHockey. Damn it. I can call it whatever I like. - PT21

I think we are interpreting his words differently. I believe what he meant is that because of his personal closeness to people of Asian ethnicity, he is able to relate more viscerally and more directly to dangers of xenophobia against them.
In our world, we are so bombarded by claims (real and imagined) of hurt and harm, that sometimes we become inured. Even though we are not bad people.
Having a personal connection breaks through the apathy and makes you relate more. That's how I read Chris' post. |

Just stop. Its from China, end of story. We will call it what we wish, not because you project your own racism on to others motives, but because that is what it is. Im so tired of people like you trying to rewrite history because it hurts your feelings. Get over it. Giving it a different name doesn't change anything other than to make you look silly and trying to hide truth. I would rather you just go back to the kids table a STFU while the adults discuss it. - MBFlyerfan

I spent a year of my boyhood in Indonesia. Why did you choose that user name?

Are you referring to his avatar? He lauded Marner throughout the year before Marner was drafted. Its a joke, referring to that time.
I often disagree with him too, but to me he appears to be one of the only posters here who actually has some analytical reasoning behind what he says. Many years ago, he compared a goalie (I forget who) to Felix the Cat in how far back in his net he stayed. 2-3 years ago, he posted a heat map of Hagg to show his immobility. When we were arguing about whether to bring in Laine, he said that PL plays the entire game as though it were a power play (coasting and blasting).
Further, he is a gentleman. Too much so, imo, but I would not want the world to be made up of guys only like me.
Sorry to butt in. Not taking sides. I respect you both. I remember you corrected me in pointing out that the correct word is retardate not retard. Just saying what I see. - PT21

Did the President at the time propose renaming 9/11 the Egyptian bombing or the Saudi bombing or the Muslim bombing, months after everyone had already started referring to it as 9/11?
That would be the analogy you are looking for. |

That there lies the problem. We are communicating on the internet where race, gender, sexuality of the people talking really has no barring on the topic discussed. As MJL stated it truly was an act to show superiority on the subject matter, but at the same time shows a flawed mentality. Like I said before, if a person needs that "personal connection" to have an understanding then they may need to look a bit deeper into themselves.
Now would we be discussing this if COVID started in Russia or Sweden...probably not.

The last 30 years have been tough for the community that is Trump's most passionate base.
Economically, there has been outsourcing of both manufacturing and services.
Professionally, there has been a tremendous shift from "traditional" jobs to professions like consulting, computers etc. In other words, those that require abstract thinking skills.
Demographically, the white fraction of the population has plummeted.
Culturally, there has been ever more increasing presence of gays, minorities, women in high professions, woke culture etc. etc.
They are on the outside on all of these trends. The pain of feeling marginalized and not being heard is real no matter whose fault it is.
But real pain can often lead to fake solutions, as throughout history. Trump's use of "China virus" was part of the same general strategy that tells his base that it is someone else's fault. That bad guys are putting them down and are the reason for their distress. At the time he did it, there was already a widespread pattern of violence against Asians throughout the West because of this and he knew it.
It like Ed Snider saying the reason for our drought is that because Bettman rigs things against us, and referees are biased and so on, at a time when a section of Flyers fans are already throwing things at referees. Not only is it the wrong explanation, it is also the wrong thing to do as a laeder. - PT21
This is the biggest load of garbage being spewed by the type of person who thinks they know so much better than everyone else.
It’s a shame schools of higher learning uses to teach critical thinking skills and now it programs kids on right think and thought crimes.
Good is bad black is white, up is downand so on.
I call it the China virus etc because that’s the origin.
I use the language that’s appropriate. If you want to hijack the meaning of words have at it that’s your right.
With that in mind don’t expect me to fall in line.
I would expect better from an educated man. |

Please, at least make an effort to not sound like like a half-wit, even if it does not come naturally. Please, at least make an effort.
Personal experiences of race, gender, sexuality of the people have no bearing on the topic being discussed on the Internet? So, for instance, you could opine about what it means to be a transsexual non-video-game playing nymphomaniac midget, and your views would be just as valid as someone who is, or has a close personal relationship with a transsexual non-video-game playing nymphomaniac midget? And someone who has such a personal relationship is merely being superior in bringing this up explicitly?
